4.0 out of 5 stars Book is ok but.... 31 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
.. ok so the book is good. I wanted it because I needed to pass the OCA Oracle Solaris 11 exam our OPN contract. However a couple of points you will find useful.

1) Oracle website is wrong. The exam topics are not complete.
2) The book doesn't cover the required exam topics, based on the exam topics from the website, not the books fault.

You will also need to look into AI (automated installer), and some extensive use of zfs for backups. You will also want to delve a bit further into networking, IPMP being one subject area.

Out of the 81 questions I was asked, 19 were not covered by the book or Oracles website(or even the course they describe in the GLP) which is pretty poor showing from Oracles point of view tbh.

However I passed, so all good, still annoyed me though.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than an exam guide 31 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The Oracle Solaris 11 Exam Guide provides a detailed and yet clear explanation of the features of the Solaris 11 Operating System. Despite being geared mainly to the OCA exam, it also provides useful information about topics not currently covered by the exam objectives. Its succinct yet easy to understand style proved to be highly enjoyable. The book encourages you to focus on understanding the Operating System features rather than providing a huge amount of information for the sole purpose of passing the exam. In this respect, it is a welcome change.

This book successfully combines a style which is easy to read with an accurate and detailed technical content. It is laid out well, with a good "Contents" and "Index" for easy reference. It would be useful to any budding or experienced Solaris 11 system administrator whether planning to take an exam or not. It covers both SPARC and x86 systems. The electronic version (on a CD at the back of the book) usefully includes 2 practice exams including answers and detailed explanations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Solaris 11 Guide 2 Jun 2013
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
If you are a beginner to Solaris, an old-timer who wants a concise book on what is new to the OS or a person just preparing for the exam: this is the Solaris book for you.

As an IT administrator of a UNIX and Windows environment, I look for a book that gets me in to the material quickly, explains the "whys" and other questions that I may have, and provides abundant material and assistance for taking the test.

This book exceeds in every account.
1. Information quickly: Just as Solaris does not have a lot of fluff, this book is the same. Straight and to the point in a very conversational manner.

2. Why and other question: The author jumps right into the material and seems to have struggled upon your behalf to get to the meat of the subject so as to not waste your time. You are empowered by understanding the tasks and concepts which will ensure that you are not just a trained monkey typing commands without knowing the reasons why.

3. Exam preparation: As stated above this is a concise presentation of the OS. The book is setup to hit the Certification Objectives, provides self-test and drills. There is a DVD providing Interactive Study Tools and pdf of the book to study off of one's smart device.

I highly encourage you to get this book. It will immediately be put to good use and not a paperweight or doorstop or monitor stand. This information is great to know to assist you to do your job in general and to assist you in the exam.

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't help prepare for the test at all 18 Oct 2013
By Jman - Published on Amazon.com

Bought the book with hopes of reading it and taking the test. Also took the class from Oracle. Neither the book or the class even remotely prepare you for the test. There are many things asked on the test that are not covered in the book nor in the class. Highly disappointed.

Content according to OCA certification. Quite specific for certification, managing to keep the reader's attention. Very good book. I recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight 17 Oct 2013

I've done a lot of Solaris 10 in the past and have been certified in it for a few years. I bought this book thinking it would cover the new stuff in Sol 11 as I had just started a project to implement T5 servers running clustered ldoms with zones on top of them (p2v'd sol 10 zones).

Partly my fault for not checking out the contents enough but this is too much an introduction to Solaris, with none of the important features of Sol 11 covered, or at best just touched on. I wanted layered virtual networking, IPS, branded zones, p2v, crossbow, ipadm, dladm etc. As I said my fault but this is not an in depth reference, 1Z0-821 is "Sysadmin 1" from the old Sun days, adding users, managing printers etc. Anyone with Sol10 cert wants something that covers 1Z0-820, OCP and this just doesn't.

Since buying it, I've skimmed the book for new stuff and there's virtually none, however there are litterally hundreds of great, free Oracle blogs about Sol11 stuff and they have been way more useful than this book.

The book is good as a start point to prepare your self for the exam, it will give you an overview about each section in the exam and then you need to search more information about each section.
