Product Description

Product Description

Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference is a handy guide for DBAs who intend to use Oracle Recovery Manager for database backup and recovery. Because Recovery Manager (RMAN) is a relatively new tool, many DBAs are just becoming familiar with it. They will welcome a timely book that explains clearly and concisely how to use RMAN for common backup and recovery tasks that are infrequent, yet extremely vital.

The first portion of the book is primarily task-oriented. After a short section on RMAN architecture, the book shows (in checklist style) how to perform common backup and recovery tasks such as:

  • Implementing a recovery catalog
  • Creating and running RMAN scripts
  • Configuring input/output channels
  • Taking a full database backup
  • Backing up tablespaces and datafiles
  • Taking incremental backups
  • Recovering lost datafiles

The second portion of the book consists of a handy syntax reference to the many RMAN commands. Having a quick reference to RMAN commands is a great convenience to DBAs who otherwise, often under the pressure of a recovery situation, would have to wade through Oracle's online documentation.

From the Publisher

Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference is ideal for DBAs who require a concise reference to common RMAN tasks. The first portion of the book presents commands for such tasks as taking a full database backup, recovering from loss of data file, and cloning a database. The second portion offers a very concise RMAN syntax reference. This book will save DBAs time when performing tasks that are infrequent, yet extremely vital.

This was quite a good book for getting started with rman using both Oracle 8i and 9i. It tells you the basic of how it works and how to use it in different situations. The scripts are explained in brief so they easily can be ported to a windows platform and you can start using rman right away. A good litle book!

Very useful book for the DBA/SYSADMIN user - fits in pocket! 7 Mar 2002
By Paul C. Seeberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book by no means replaces the (online) documentation that oracle provides, or a more complete RMAN book.

But it shines when you want the syntax without carrying around a boat anchor of a book.

You need a working knowlege of RMAN for this book to be useful. If you purchase this to learn RMAN, you will be disappointed. If you know, or are learning to use RMAN, it is helpful.

I like it because I can pop it in my back (or shirt) pocket.

Half of the book is dedicated to syntax. The first half is a brief overview of the RMAN world.

It is a 'Must Have' for anyone using RMAN. But you will need other documentation in addition. I have found the Oracle supplied documentation (on CD) very good. But it is not 'portable'.

very handy to get the syntax 10 Jan 2002

Useful to get the syntax in emergency. But not to get good knowledge on the subject. It is better to refer the technet documentation.
Don't be fooled by the 2009 copyright date 2 Nov 2011

The product description fails to mention this Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference is for Oracle versions 8 and 9. Shame on both Darl Kuhn and Scott Schulze for FAILING TO BE HONEST on what is being sold for $6.15. The "click to look inside" has a cover link but it does not show you the cover that says "Covers 9i" (see the customer image that I attached). All that would be needed is to mention the 8i/9i version information in the PRODUCT DESCRIPTION. And "no", I will not give O'Reilly $4.99 for DRM-free or PDF or any "future" updates.
