THE De facto book on RMAN 25 May 2010
By Eric L. Yen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I learned RMAN by going through the first version of this book "Oracle9i RMAN Backup & Recovery". This book takes the same step-by-step technique for the most recent release, 11g R2.
The use of "RMAN Workshops" to reinforce the lessons learned in the chapters is something I wish EVERY Oracle Press book would do. The chapters related to working with 3rd Party products (Veritas NetBackup, HP Data Protector, and Tivoli Storage Manager) increases the value of this book. This book is BEYOND just the Oracle Documentation.

Get this book learn the fundamentals of RMAN.
If you are a seasoned DBA get this book and learn what is new.

A Meandering Maze That Eventually Leads to the Cheese 24 Dec 2011
By ESVK - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a thorough book on Oracle RMAN for sure. But it does a poor job of clearly and concisely answering the question: "How do I back up my database with RMAN?" It is 100 pages into the book before you ever see a hands-on command. Before that it goes into great detail about the database services and memory system. While that is important in the long-run to know, it is totally unnecessary to make your first backup. Even after getting to the meat of RMAN, the book doesn't provide a quick reference summary or a "cheat sheet." If time is not of the essence and you prefer an academic approach, then this is a very good book. But if you are in a real world situation where you need to perform a backup today, then I would search for RMAN on YouTube. There are several short videos that demonstrate what takes hours for this book to accomplish.

This book is exactly what i need for now.
I want to implement the Oracle backup at my office right away, and I have this book that can guide me through it.
So if you don't have a time to take some Oracle course, just read the book. It will gives you the right understanding concepts of RMAN.
