Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This small slim volume is a concise guide to using Oracle's SQL*Plus tool which acts as a front-end to the SQL querying language. Oracle SQL*Plus Pocket Reference does not attempt to teach you how to use the language but provides a quick reference to the commands available and the ways in which they can be pressed into service.

It's terse but informative, as befits a pocket guide, and so small that the usually entertaining O'Reilly colophon is omitted--which is a shame. The first half covers basic interactions such as string handling and naming variables, moving on to deal with selecting data, formatting reports and tuning SQL statements plus a section on formatting elements that let you do almost anything with number and date displays, including showing dates with a BC or AD indicator. In the tuning section there is brief coverage of execution plans for SQL statements and of how to tune the Oracle optimiser that puts those plans into operation. The second half forms the SQL command reference section, everything from ACCEPT to WHENEVER.

This eminently pocketable reference book would be invaluable for jogging the memory in those odd moments of blankness-- and it's almost palmable if you're shy about admitting fallibility. --Mark Whitehorn --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Oracle Magazine, Feb 2003

This information alone makes the book a must-have reference for any Oracle user. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

If you're looking for a compact quick reference book on SQL*Plus then this'll do the job. The second half the text is purely given over to listing the commands in alpha order, with short examples, but if you want more on SQL query statements (other than "select"), then look elsewhere. On the whole, it does what it sets out to do.

I've been in Oracle development for quite a while, and find that as the toolset develops, it becomes more difficult to remember everything that Oracle introduces on each new release. This book is an excellent, concise reference book, excellent for jogging the memory. Additionally, it had a couple of topics which I wasn't aware of and I've since used them on a live problem, so for me the book has already paid for itself. One critisism though, was I couldn't find information on the CUBE and ROLLUP functions. It covers 'GROUP BY' so I thought that it would have these too. This is a minor point, but is reflected in the four star rating. Highly recommended as a dip-in reference.

A Real Time Saver 25 May 2000

This pocket reference version has been a real time saver! I really appreciated the concise, clear explanations and examples. Since my co-workers are always walking off with it, I'm having to buy another copy for myself.

A great revision guide. 25 Jun 2001
By C. D. Marsh - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
After 7 years solid experience within the ORACLE toolset I find that books like this not only teach us a few new things but are also great revision guides giving new thought to commands, formats, functions etc not used or thought of for some time.

In my opinion, even though a small book, it was well worth the money and one that all Oracle users of whatever standard will appreciate. I suggest any purchser write their name in it.

Extremely Useful... 21 Sep 2006
By J H Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
...a good combination of size, price, and content. I have the 3rd edition, which includes an 8-page index. I use this as part of teaching a class in Oracle Developer and recommend it for my students. As the other reviewers recommend, write your name in it...the Oreilly pocket references are easy to misplace, and walk off sometimes. There are four blank pages at the end for your own notes. Content is adequate for its purpose -- for extensive details, the Oracle online documentation is available, if slower to access.

Drawbacks? I'd like a larger index, although the current one is useful. A little bit more room throughout the book for notes might be handy, although it would enlarge the book a bit. I think the content is about right, although there will always be things one can't find, and other topics which are never used in this type of book.

And, as with all the Oreilly pocket references I've seen, there is no colophon, so one must go to the original large book to discover that the insect on the front cover is a moving leaf, Phyllium giganteum, a Malaysian creature which grows to about four inches in length...roughly the width of the book!
