From the Author

Buy and Read this Book and you'll be Great at Tuning Oracle!
Whether you are a DBA or Developer, buy and read this whole book and you will learn what I have learned painfully in over a decade of tuning Oracle. This was VERY painful to write and I only wrote it so that YOU could feel that great feeling from making the impact that tuning brings. I repeat some topics in the book more than once so that each chapter can be read independently (hard to have the time to read it all at once). This is my gift back to you … make sure that you take advantage of it. Also, there is no CD ... I highly recommend the books PL/SQL Tips and Techniques by Joe Trezzo and Oracle8i Web Development by Bradley Brown. Also, an advanced tuning book on Latches is great by Steve Adams and on UNIX tuning by Ahmed Alomari.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage... 7 Feb 2002

Format:Paperback
This is a great book for ORACLE tuners from instance to application level - it has a lot of ideas with examples in plain english - explaining the dynamics and the benefits you gain.
It's one of those rare books written by somebody who's obviously used the product in a 'real' environment and wanted to communicate his years of experience in a practical way...

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, a real guide for DBA's 28 Jun 2000

Format:Paperback
I've had this book for a couple of days now and I'm impressed. The book explains many concepts that a DBA will need to know if they are to fine tune a system and provides lots of good SQL code. It is repetitive, but in a positive sense i.e everything you need on a subject is there in one place rather than having to jump around from section to section (something that I find really annoying). This book will help new and experienced DBA's alike and will be a valuable addition to any DBA's bookshelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but could have been a lot thinner! 2 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Well worth the money but I agree with others who suggest that there is a lot of repetition in the book. This doesn't make it bad, though. I found it to be very helpful in many areas and pulls together lots of different subject matter very well. The main grumble is that there is NO CD so I can't cut and paste the many snippets of SQL they provide. Still, I'd recommend this book over the competition if you're looking for something on performance/tuning.

On the issue of repetition, I find that many Oracle Series books seem to repeat, space things out well, print long code listings (even of large PL/SQLblocks) etc. It looks like they are desperately trying to write 1000 pages ! I note that one of the co-authors also wrote the Oracle Press reference book for web server which was even worse in this sense.
