Selected extracts from Oracle R12 Implementation Guide 20 July 2009
By Joe's review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is for you if you have not heard about Oracle EBS General Ledger and you do not know the existence of Oracle documentation. Having been in Oracle consultantcy for 12 years, I have never come across such a poorly presented book on Oracle EBS. Some comparably bad ones are Oracle Procure to pay by Melanie Cameron and Oracle EBS Financials Administration by Shanker Iyer.

There are better books available on Oracle EBS like Oracle EBS Financials Handbook by David James, Oracle EBS manufacturing & Supply chain by Bastin Gerald and Solution Beacon publications.

Back to the book, the contents of the book have nothing to do with the title "Implement a highly automated financials". I was expecting a book with functional prespective, technical architecture (Financials), Interfacing along with the business process & Testing. Boy! I was busted! This book contains only selected text from Oracle Implementation and user guides.

Leaving the front & back wrapper, about the author, contents, index , blank pages etc the effective size of the book is about 250 pages. Out of these 250 pages, a significant portion has been taken by screen shots of EBS R12. None of the subjects are adquately covered. For example. multi currency is covered in just 7 pages, No referece about Advanced Global Inter company system is found. AGCS is just touched and so on and so forth.

The new/modified features in GL like Ledger set, Data Access set, MOAC, SLA, TAX, etc are not adequately covered.

On the other hand, I have read some of the white papers presented by the author on Oracle Financials that are really well presented. They also show that the author is highly knowledgable in the subject!

Useful material for a person who is not very experienced in R12. However even an experienced consultant can find some interesting chapters.
For someone who just starts with R12 the book points important, new features and new philosophy of the architecure of the application. Good position to start with but then one must search for more detailed manuals.

I like her writing style. 27 Jan 2010
By John Matlock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Oracle, of course, started out as a database. Indeed the first of the big SQL oriented database packages. From there it has grown into far more than that with numerous dedicated applications. This book concentrates on Oracle's E-Business Suite's General Ledger platform. ==It goes beyond a basic description of the program to take the view that you should approach the program from the standpoint of what you want out of it in the way of information that is useful to the day to day and year to year operation of your business.

To be sure, much of the information here can be found in the Oracle documentation, but I found that the quality of the writing and the general approach to be much better. While the detail of what to put in each field is there, I didn't find it quite so able to put me to sleep.
