From the Author

Combining technical information with sound methodology
In writing this book, our philosophy was not simply to discuss how to use the Designer product but how to use Oracle Designer to actually build systems. To this end, there is a considerable amount of methodology included along with tips and techniques for using the much improved Designer 2.1 release.

We recognize that some readers are only interested in the technical aspects of the tool. For this reason, in the second edition, we have greatly expanded and revised the technical portions of the book and all of the methodology chapters have been separated from the technical tool-specific chapters. Developers can focus on these technical chapters of the book; while managers needing to grasp the overall concepts of sound systems development and overview of the Designer product can concentrate on the methodology chapters.

However, we still recognize that, even at 1071 pages (thicker than the Manhattan white pages), this book is still not a complete treatment of the Oracle Designer product. Much more will follow in the next edition.

This is the only book available on the subject-Des/2k v2.1, at the moment! So the author are making a lot of $$$. I got a feeling that this book is almost theoretical description of the subject without practical samples about how to successfully utilize Des/2k in very big, medium and very small projects (that is what I'm looked for!). The differences from the 1st edition - book is split into two parts. 1st part - theoretical (should be practical!) authors view on the subjects like development cycle - Strategy, Analysis. Seems that this part is almost completely reprinted from 1st edition. The second part that could be called: Designer for Dummies - authors continue to explain how to arrange entities on the diagram and where to press the <Generate> button! :( Of course the book have some good chapters! But my feeling is that much more practical (useful!) information you can get from Oracle conferences, by becoming member of Oracle user groups, like ODTUG, and from CDM references! The Strategy and Analysis using Des/2k are subjects Oracle want us to pay much more than just $50. As a handbook I can rate it only with two points!

As usual, the authors have produced a very useful and easily readable work. An absolute must to those interested in using this tool, especially if upgrading from earlier version. I would have recommended a little less on methodology (well-covered in their book on Version 1.x of Designer/2000) and a lot more on generation. Success with this tool normally is determined by the quality of the generated output of Designer.
