I was in the market to replace my 37" TV and because I don't really watch TV, I was looking into projectors, specifically short throw ones. The market is pretty small for this type of projector, I narrowed it down to the Benq w1070 and the Optoma gt1070x or gt1080. Having looked at online reviews, it's hard to choose between them- some say the benq has better image quality but louder and others seem to say the opposite. I finally opted for this one and it's fantastic. Here are the questions I had before purchase that I really couldn't get a straight answer for:

-Is the picture quality good?
-Yes! When I first powered it on, the settings were all wrong- vivid picture mode was selected which really washes everything out in a dark room but probably works ok for a room with some light. Switching to cinema mode brings back deeper blacks and better colours. For black levels- the way I compare is to see how bright a black area of the screen is compared to the wall next to the projected image. If the wall was 100% black, the projected black is about 95% black.
Something you may not have thought of is that because it's such a wide projector lens, there are some issues with corner sharpness, which is to say when I get the bottom of the image in focus, the extreme top corners are slightly out of focus. This is really not an issue- it's still sharp enough to read text in those corners and in movies it's impossible to tell, but if you were to use this as a monitor for a PC, it might be a pain. There's no visible purple/green fringing (chromatic abberation) in any of the corners.

Remember- the larger the image, the less bright it will be.

Just received my projector. I was torn between this or HD141X, but decided to go with this as my room isn't that big. I made such a good decision. At first, my wife nagged me for wasting money, but as soon as I put on Frozen for her, she didn't say a word. She sat there and kept watching. Trust me, you don't want to go back to TVs. And seller (ASK) was also great. It was delivered next day. Great job.

I've had this projector for 1 month now. It's pretty average. It is great having such a large picture, particularly for gaming. It's extremely responsive. However, I'm pleased I haven't bought this to replace my 47" LCD. It turns out i'm incredibly sensitive to the dreaded 'rainbow effect'. Whereas my flatmate barely notices it. This isn't a fault of the projector, however you may want to demo it or other DLP projectors before buying. It's incredibly distracting.
Also, picture quality varies greatly, depending on what you're using it for. Downloaded content from my PC looked awful. Gaming on PS3/4 and Xbox 360/One looked fantastic. iPlayer content looked good, surprisingly, and depending on the quality of the feed, most tv looked ok. Tron Legacy shown on BBC, in a pitch black room looked great.
Tonight I watched a blu ray copy of Inception, expecting wonders, and it ended up looking like a VHS copy! Smeared textures and generally poor definition. Really unimpressive. Experimenting with modes and settings didn't help.
The picture is acceptable in a reasonably bright room. The projector gets EXTREMELY hot and is VERY VERY noisy! I can still hear it over my meaty 5.1 system!
I'll keep the projector, but looks like it'll only come out now for gaming sessions with friends or big screen film nights for my friends kids.
It's a shame.

*UPDATE*

I realised the copy of Inception I was watching was the dvd. Doh! I've since tried the Blu Ray copy, along with a few other films and I have to admit they all looked good. So I've added an extra star. I guess this projector is good if you use only HD media.

As advertised it is great if you are short of space. The image quality in movie is great
The bad point is that you forced to move the projector backwards or forward in order to match your size of screen.

Video good - sound..well, temperamental at best. Sometimes it works - then it stops. Also has issues picking up 3d sources when set to auto mode. Set it up manually and the 3d works. Rather annoying when switching between inputs/type of video etc. I've contacted ASK(seller) and Optoma to see if I have a faulty one or if there is anything else I can try, Disappointed
