Introducing, the Optoma HD230X Full HD 1080P projector; the best recognised digital cinema performance, capable of producing an image size of up to 300 inches diagonally. Full HD sports and gaming are not to be missed on this projector, whilst the cinema and reference settings are paramount when it comes to watching movies. The cinema setting produces a bright, well balanced and true to life colour reproduction which only complements the clarity of detail offered by the HD230X - essential for reaching the optimum image quality of any film.
In the reference setting colours can be muted for a more natural effect, whereas use with a PC relies on bright mode to give a sharp and impactful image, apt for displaying excel sheets or PowerPoint presentations that need to be clear. The menu is user friendly and makes it simple to choose from a range of modes and settings including colour, contrast, brightness and more.
The projector chassis is refined with a glossy black finish which complements the curved body and hard lines of the casing, but in addition to suiting a home cinema aesthetically, the HD230X is also one of the smallest 1080p projectors on the market. An advantage that is exclusive to DLP technology, which has traditionally been very lightweight compared to other technologies. Furthermore, there is housing for a universal ceiling mount.
2300 ANSI lumens brightness, extensive HD connectivity, 24P operation and a superior ANSI contrast all cumulate to an outstanding 1080p projector, but it’s the affordability and low running cost of this product that really make you appreciate these features.
Lights on Entertainment
With the bright 2300 ANSI Lumens, you can watch live sports or play action-packed games any time of day. Alternatively, you can use the additional brightness for an extra-large screen to give you that true home cinema experience. The HD230X can project an 80” diagonal image from less than 3 meters away, meaning it will fit easily into most living rooms. A new lamp will last a remarkable 3,000 hours in normal mode and 4,000 hours in economy mode, but when a lamp does need replacing the quick lamp release makes this a simple task. A full range of Optoma screens are also available to suit any install.
Two HDMI v1.3 digital inputs are a massive advantage of the HD230X and greatly benefit the user in terms of practicality. This unit can be used by gamers, sports fans and home cinema enthusiasts. A games console and digital television receiver can be plugged in via HDMI simultaneously making switching between sources literally the push of a button, as opposed to awkward manual switching. Additional connectivity includes all standard video inputs: composite, component and VGA.
‘24P’ also known as ‘24 frames per second’ is the video format that most films are traditionally shot in. Most televisions can’t display video at this rate, so in order to preserve the purity of the original image the HD230X can accept High Definition sources at 24 frames per second. Therefore, you can watch movies exactly as the director intended.
5 Year Colour Guarantee
BrilliantColor technology used in DLP projectors; features multi-colour processing to produce stunning, vibrant colours the screen. Unlike other technologies such as LCD which use just 3 primary colours to produce an image, DLP technology with BrilliantColor uses up to six separate colours.
Colour accuracy is not only improved, but it brightens secondary colours as well. This combination produces a new level of colour performance that increases the brightness of the colours by up to 50% over DLP projectors without BrilliantColor.
What’s more, is that Optoma is so confident that the HD230X colour will not change or decay in use that we have guaranteed it will retain the same quality performance as the day of purchase, for at least 5 years.
Lens Cover, AC Power Cord, Backlit IR Remote Control with Batteries, +12v Plug, M3 Screws, Quick Start Card, CD User Manual, Warranty Card
The Optoma HD230X delivers exceptional quality Full HD viewing without the need to dim the lights, so you can invite all your friends round to watch the big match, enjoy your favourite movies or action-packed games, and take advantage of the ultimate home entertainment experience. The 2300 ANSI Lumens project you straight into the front row, any time of day or night.
Most movies are shot at 24 frames per second. To preserve the purity of the original image the HD230X can accept High Definition sources at 24 frames per second and so display movies exactly as the director intended. The HD230X incorporates BrilliantColor multi-colour processing technology to bring stunning, vibrant colour to your screen. Using six separate primary and secondary colours to produce a new level of colour performance and control, BrilliantColor increases colour brightness by up to 50 % over other technologies to create accurate true to life images.
The staggering brightness of the HD230X enables two exciting prospects.....Ultra Brightness means that the HD230X can be used in environments where the light is not completely controlled, for a lights-on, full HD 1080p Home Cinema experience. Also, Ultra brightness means your screen can be huge; the HD230X can deliver SMPTE standard brightness on screen sizes of up to nearly 5 m - making it suitable for small auditoriums or events with a large audience.See all Product Description

On the plus side this projector is very quiet in use, the 1080p full HD is impressive, as is the colour reproduction and it is compact. The focus and zoom rings were chunky and seemed well built and the back lit remote and menus were excellent.
Ultimately though for us as a family none of the good points mattered as every time we tried to view anything we were continually troubled by the rainbow effect on the whites that was quite headache inducing and impossible to ignore. This is the reason we returned this item. If you can live with the shortfalls then you have got an excellent item for the price, otherwise you are going to have to opt for a more expensive LCD projector.
I am quite surprised at the difference in image quality between 720p and 1080p. I did not think the full HD would be much of an improvement, but it makes quite a difference when you play a 1080p Blu-ray disc. The HD230x has two hdmi v1.3 (Deep Colour) inputs, and again, I have noticed quite a difference. The colour is rich and vibrant with no colour bleed what so ever.
I am having trouble finding issues with the performance of this projector. The fan noise is also very quite in ecco mode. It is truly amazing value for money. I'm sure you could spend four, or even six times as much on a higher spec machine, but I cannot believe that the picture would be four to six times better.
The only criticisms I have is that it only comes with a one-year warranty, (the Z5 came with a three year), and every time you zoom the image you have to re-focus. It does not hold the focus like on the Z5. Other than these two points, I am very happy.
This is a review of Optoma policy and this product, not of the supplier.
In the past, I have been 'pro' Optoma but my recent experience with Optoma's aftersales service has demonstrated a need for the company to completely rethink it's service and warranty approach.
Item 'appeared' to be fine for coming up to two years. We experienced odd noises from one of the fans and found if rebooted the axle would settle down. That should have been a warning to us about reliability of parts. Then straight after two years expires the unit failed, (note that EU law states goods must work for 2 years and that electrical goods are covered by EU law on this matter whatever the manufacturer or supplier says). This turned out to be a sensor on the main board. So we sent it away for estimate.
Optoma charge £55+VAT for 'estimating' - refusing to give an idea on what cost could be over the phone even when given an accurate description of fault explained and that a replacement fan had been fitted (I am a qualified and long term experienced ICT Technician). Eventually after chasing Optoma for the estimate we were told £225+VAT for a new main board with only 90 day warranty. It was claimed that casing was damaged and that a new one would be needed (no charge). 90 day warranty for a major part swap and a cost 2/3rds of a replacement appears to me that Optoma are not confident about their repairs or confident about their parts. After complaining about the cost and warranty period the price was reduced to £145+VAT which I rejected as there is too much risk of another failure involving a mainboard in 90 days time. I'd rather put the money on the purchase of a projector with a five year warranty - wouldn't you?Read more ›
The BIG problem was Yodel who were due to collect. Their website was down so I could not see when they were due to collect. I was in all day, waiting. Finally around 6pm I could access their site and read they were due to collect around 8.30pm. But NO SHOW. Day 2 I could not get into the scheduling on the Yodel site as my "post code does not exist". It did the day before. It does now. Yodel came at 1.30pm Day 2, and put a note thru, but were so quick my wife did not have time to get to the door. Amazon reallocated collection to Citylink and they came about 9.30am, 1/2 hour ahead of schedule, Day 3.
The replacement is, so far anyway, excellent. No rainbow effect seen. The screen is brighter that the first [clearly defective] one. Easy to use, recommended. Just find time to test it early tho'
