Product Description

Product Description

Michael Clark virtually wrote the book that personal trainers all over America use to gain their certification in the field. As creator of the Optimum Performance Training system, he took personal training to a whole new level by introducing a program that could be fully customized for any sport. In this book, Clark will enable readers through his "self-assessment and design fitness system" to effectively pinpoint the weaknesses in their basketball skills and tailor a workout program that will improve on all the flaws in their game. By taking advantage of skill-specific tests, readers will be able to focus their workout time on the area they most need and will see quick results. This user-friendly guide begins with a simple five-step assessment to help you realize what your game lacks. Whether you want explosiveness off the first step, coordination and flexibility, the vertical leap, muscle strength, you'll pinpoint your deficiencies and benefit from the exact same workout that Clark uses for the NBA's biggest stars. Clark's revolutionary approach to fitness and conditioning personalizes the workouts not only by sport, but also by performance skills, and will help you become the best basketball player you can be. With customizable workouts, sets, and reps, everyone from basketball fanatics to weekend warriors can find the program just right for them, and get the extra skills to crash the boards, run the court, and power their way down the lane for all four quarters.

This is a great book. It is well written, in very simple, plain language, and if you put in the time on the programme, it will definitely improve your basketball game.

It's divided into a number of parts. It sets out the theory behind how and why the training programme works. It then goes on to show you how do a self assessment. And then based on the results of that assessment, it allows you to create a tailored and structured stretching and exercise programme that will improve your physical ability to play basketball. There's no short cuts with this programme, but you will see and feel results within a month or so.

Having said that the book is well written, the self-assessment can be tricky enough. This is no fault of the author. In fairness, the assessment is a very simple thing to do, but because you can be looking for some subtle body movements, they might really need the trained eye of a physiotherapist or osteopath. If you are just an amateur but are serious about trying to genuinely improve, then I reckon that an assessment session with a physio is probably money well spent. Just read the book before hand and explain to them what you want them to do when you make the appointment.

5 stars for the sheer quality of the programme, (identifying your own physical imbalances & weaknesses, rectifying them, stretching, core stabilty, strength and power training and all specific to basketball) but I'd have to deduct a star for the self-assessment. It's a great book for anyone with an interest in physical training.

interesting collection of basketball drills. Some of them are very basic but there are plenty of interesting ones. Depending on your coaching experience, you will definitely find 10 or 20+ drills and add them in your repertoire.

Mandatory for your basketball CLIENTS to read. 14 May 2007
By Superstar Shad - Published on Amazon.com

Optimum Performance Training: Basketball is a tough book to review. From the viewpoint of someone who's a NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist, I was expecting a more thorough approach on how to train NBA players. I didn't receive that with this book. However, Optimum Performance Training is a tremendous tool that the NASM trainer should give their basketball clients to minimize the 'buying in' process. Enhance yor credibility with this one.

Could have been better. 15 Oct 2009
By Michael A. Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a Fitness Professional who is certified with NASM in the CES program. I bought this book to give me a better understanding of the performance enhancement apsects of Optimum Performance Training, however, the exercises and information in this book repeat themselves. Sometimes that is a technique used by authors to demonstrate their importance, but it just gets redundent. This would be a good book for beginners, or someone looking for different exercises to add to their current workout routines. The OPT Model is good and I use it with my clients, but the programs in this book aren't going to get anyone at professional athletic conditioning; they are way too easy. I like the author and NASM, but this book was a disappointment.

Excellent resource 30 Jan 2006
By Rhonda L. Barrera - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is excellent for the general population and fitness professionals. It is easy to follow and so functional. The workouts are fun and produce great results! I am a physical therapist assistant and have been a personal trainer for 12 years and love all of NASM's resources. Caroline San Juan and Mike Clarke are wonderful!!
