Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the technology applied for unambiguous and contactless identification of all types of objects. Varying magnetic fields or radio waves enable contactless data transfer as well as fast, automatic data collection. In addition, the importance of optical codes gains further importance due to their specific advantages. RFID and Auto ID systems are used in a wide range of sectors – from the consumer goods industry and trade via the automotive and aerospace industries to the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries, as well as logistics and transport facilities. About the Author
NORBERT BARTNECK is the Competence Center RFID manager at Siemens AG Mobility Division. He is responsible for RFID–based logistical solutions with a main focus on postal and airport logistics. VOLKER KLAAS is the Competence Center Auto ID/RFID manager at Siemens AG, IT–Solutions and Services. He is a member of the RFID working circle at BITKOM and in the EPCglobal EAG. HOLGER SCHOENHERR is the Competence Center RFID manager at Siemens AG, Industry Automation Division . He is an AIM Germany board member.
