Reviews

Region 2 Italian import, plays in English without subtitles. Peter Sellers was, and remains, one of Britain's finest comedic geniuses, a member of the legendary Goons (a famous forerunner to Monty Python) and noted character chameleon, able to slip effortlessly into every one of his frequently farcical roles. But what many people fail to recognize is that with said reputation comes an oft-forgotten facet: Sellers was a sensational actor. Because humor seems so inherently a part of a person's makeup, and since laughter can drown out any other critical consideration, few remember how effective Sellers could be outside a joke-filled setting. Granted, he didn't get much of a chance to show it, but the truth is that when driven, he could be as amazing - and difficult - as his equally infamous American counterparts. Case in point - 1973's The Optimists. Taken from Andrew Simmons' noted novel, this story of a strapped street performer who befriends two children was seen as a chance for the commercially questionable Sellers to stretch his performance wings. Indeed, it remains one of his most fully realized turns ever.

I cannot understand why this film is not available in Britain! It is truly a five star film and suitable for all ages. Peter Sellers was one of the biggest stars of the last fifty years for God's sakeand we should expect all of his films to be available in Britain. It makes no sense that the are'nt.
This also goes for 'I love you Alic B Toklas'(although obviously not for all ages).

not alot of you,s will have seen this peter sellers film its very rare, just been put out on dvd in the USA but the sound is not to good so im told on the region 1 dvd import and also the picture is set at 1.78:1 widescreen with a good looking picture, but i have just got a copy from amazon UK that,s an import from ITALY and that,s just been put out there to on dvd, the sound is very good and in english speach with out forced sub,s and its 1.85.1 widescreen full format, the picture look,s very good in most part,s of the film, the film its self is of a very good story with a nice cast set in london in the 70,s, seller play,s an ex show preformer who live,s alone with his old best friend dog, he befriends two young kids and goes about trying to teach them about life as he see,s it, a top preformance from the late mr seller that keeps you very much so entertained, a very nice film to be had at last on dvd for me a 10 out of 10 on this one.

This has to be one of the greatest films I have ever watched........ Why rip-off, because if you want region 2(USA) it is only £2.34 but if you want region 1(UK), the price escalates to a totally scandalous £29.99........and the producers say we are not ripped off????????? You'll get some lame excuse that it's down to manufacturing costs. Maybe they should make region 1's in USA then we can all have them for £2.34. I point blank refuse to add my name to the list of exploytees aka suckers who have fallen for this scam. Fortunately I do have a secondary dvd player to play the cheap American imports but that does not make the price differential acceptable. Such a shame as it appeals to all ages and has to be Peter Sellars best performance ever.
