There are several designs for the same function. So take note of what suits your setup.
This is the best one, for me at least.

These vary by direction of the cables inserts, locking switch, gauge size, selection indicator, product size.
I also bought this version (which I sent back) I'll be referring this as "the other" as we compare the two.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/HD-Quality-Optical-Switch-Etc/dp/B003NZ0X9C/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318668392&sr=1-5

Reasons for the one I kept:
The major detail. This one takes cables from the back and points it to the side. The other one takes cables from the side and points to the other side.

Locking switch:
Same design on both, one button squeeze. Probably better than the two button squeeze seen in another design

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cable-Mountain-Optical-link-Switcher/dp/B001DN21DW/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1318668392&sr=1-4

Cable Gauge size: This one is a bit bigger perhaps will let more light through the switch, hence better chance for longer cables. Not tested, just theory.

Selection indicator: This one is brighter using florescent label instead of red in the other. Minor detail.

Product size: This is one bigger by 1cm in longest diameter than the other one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Optical data switch 17 Jun 2012
Works well, very easy to use, now I can have all my optical audio devices plugged with just a switch to select instead of having optical cables to keep switching about.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rubbish 23 July 2013

Be prepared to pay more to get a decent splitter that works (I have now). This one worked for a short while to connect both SKY and pc to surround sound system but then I noticed my music kept cutting out when being played through this device. Removed it and all worked okay. Put it back in line and eventually it stopped working altogether. Additionally thanks to this poor performance I also buggered up an optical cable by constant plugging and unplugging to eliminate causes of sound loss. Don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Annoying and poor quality 23 Nov 2012

I bought this product to stop me from having to switch between PS3 output and Virgin V+ box output going into my surround sound system. At first the product was great, easy to use but I've now had this for 6 months and the audio quality has been dropping on the output side, with the signal not reaching the cable clearly. This leads to either no or distorted sound coming out of my speakers. Look for something non-mechanical, or at least something with much higher precision than this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Is this item a gamble? 23 Aug 2012

I received the item on time. It did not work for connecting a PS3 with a home theater through the switch. The light intensity of the output seems significantly lower which most probably causes loss of all the information it carries.
