Upside:
Absolutely identical in every way to the Røde (which costs double the £50 or so for the Opteka and does not include a deadcat)
Includes a deadcat
Has well placed screw holes to allow connection to boom pole or mic stand
Offers up reasonable sound - especially OFF camera - but to be fair, can give much better directional sound than inbuilt DSLR mic - and this can be used as guide sound for separate synching and replacement (in FCP or other edit software) from a Zoom or Tascam recorder

Downside:
Plastic-y (just like the Røde) and fragile
Poor / nearly non-existent instructions
Incredibly fiddly and baffling dip switches hidden in the battery compartment

I spent hours looking for something like this and from what i've seen elsewhere this is still the best buy for less than £150.

Having interviewed celebs backstage at a music festival recently it performed very well and looks very professional.

Very happy with it as use with my Nikon DSLR.

You will need a seperate mounting bracket if using with a light etc.

Runs of a 9V battery and lasts along time...circa 100 hours.

Great value for money.

I would not use the RODE as same item but paying for the brand.

What can i say!!! This Microphone is fantastic! My only problem was that it didn't come with an extension BUT that had nothing to do with the company! If you are new to film making and need a cheap bud durable mic i recommend this one!!!

Admittedly, I decided against the Rode Videomic simply due to cost. I've used Rode mics before and know them to have a decent sonic quality to them. However, this Opteka mounted shotgun is a farcry from the Rode item. It's boomy (although you can use a low cut) and leaves out a lot of the highs meaning it doesn't sound very bright at all. What's more, the noise floor on the microphone renders it fairly unusable a lot of the time. I'd have hoped for a better dynamic range and, although i don't have the specs in front of me, it doesn't sound as though there's much in there. If you're not too fussed and just want a better mic than your inbuilt one, then this is a decent choice. But if you're debating whether buying this or just paying a little extra for the Rode one, go with the Rode.

These microphones look the same as the higher priced Rode however they aren't very good. I haven't tried a rode, I'm just saying that these are cheaply made and break very easily. I'm currently having to wedge tinfoil into the battery compartment to keep the battery connected and the screw thread on the bottom has broken as it is held to the microphone with four plastic pins the thickness of a needle.

The audio quality is not fantastic. I understand that it's directional, that is why I bought it, however it doesn't really pick up what is in front of it either!

I will have to replace it at some point, and I won't be using the same make.
