Opteka MCH-25 Multi Camera Carrier Harness Holster System

I ordered the Opteka system after considering the much more expensive Cotton Carrier and reading reviews of the Opteka version that were generally very positive. I received the unit from Amazon quicker than had been advised and on opening the package, checking out how it worked and starting to adjust the straps to suit me I was quite impressed. The problem lay in the main belt buckle on the left hand side, a plastic snap-in unit that refused to hold under even a quite light tension (much less than a trouser belt). Despite ensuring that the clip/buckle snapped shut, it just would not hold.
The camera support and locking arrangement leaves the camera quite secure until turned through 90 degrees when it would easily slide up and out of the holster and overall the design was very good but it was no use without a sensibly tight belt that is the key to holding the harness secure. If the belt clip/buckle had worked as intended then it would have got a 5* rating. Amazon would not replace the faulty item, only give a refund and so I'll go direct to Opteka, get them to fully check out a new unit before despatching it to me.

I did look at the Cotton Carrier, but at £150-plus, it is well out of my pay-grade. My kind wife bought this Opteka version for me, and I can't see how the expensive brand-name could be any better. I've only had the harness for a couple of hours, and have't used it in anger yet, but so far so good.

Built quality is solid. It is made from solid materials - thick cordura, webbing and velcro. It comes in it's own netting carrier bag.

Comfortable. The straps adjust in all directions and look as if they will fit small to extra large bodies, despite the other reviewers comments. I suspect he may not have found the velco straps that adjust over the shoulders. I've tried carrying two camera - one with a 70-200mm 2.8 lens. It seems comfortable wiht both cameras, albeit a bit lopsided.

<UPDATE>
I've been using this harness for over a year now - regularly, and with about 3kg of camera-plus-lens. I still give it a full five stars. There is no degradation of materials, and it's still comfortable.

The only downside is the nerdy fashion statement, but that definitely is outweighed by the benefit of the rugged, safe, back-saving method of carrying a camera.

I bought this harness via Amazon in May of 2013 because my camera and lens set-up was beginning to cause neck problems. The rig weighs in at 5 kg so the Opteka seemed an ideal choice as the advertising claimed to accommodate set-ups weighing up to 11 kg. The first problem I very soon became aware of was with the screw attachment that fits the underside of the camera and allows it to slide into the holder. It quickly became apparent that this screw, no matter how tightly it is done up, soon becomes loose. On my first trip abroad with the harness in Zambia I soon lost a screw. Luckily I had the second screw fixed to another camera and could use this for my main rig. But I constantly had to check and re-tighten the screw as the camera inevitably moves from side to side in the holder, loosening the screw. Frequently, as the screw became loose, it was difficult to remove the camera from the holder. On a couple of occasions I even had to twist the camera off the screw while it was still locked in the holder. I emailed the source supplier, 47th Street Photo in New York, asking to be able to buy replacement screws as the whole thing is useless without them. I received a quick response, saying that Mr **** would get back in touch with me as soon as the shop was open. This never happened despite a number of further emails. It was only when I was in Florida in May this year that the phone number Amazon had given me for 47th Street Photo worked. By this time the plastic holder of the harness had begun to crack as it clearly could not take the weight of my set-up. 2 days into my Florida holiday I could no longer use it and had to resort to the normal Canon strap. Now on the phone I spoke to JD at 47th Street who agreed that I should receive a replacement harness.Read more ›

A very strong and well made harness, it has to be to enable me to carry my Canon along with the EF100-400mm lens, you can't go wrong at this price, I have been using mine continuously now since I purchased it, have wondered how I managed without it.

having arthritis and back problems I have found this carrier excellent for carrying my camera it certainly does not give me the problems I got when carrying a camera round my neck. Only thing that sometimes happens is that the fitting that fits onto the bottom of the camera and goes into the slide on the holder sometimes turns and can be a bit awkard getting out hence the 4 stars. Would recommend to anyone with back or neck problems and a great deal cheaper than other makes.

Despite some poor revues on this product, i thoughts for the price you cant really go wrong, Glad i did, this product is every bit as good as the cotton carrier at 140.00 quid, couldn't fault it. ok its not as robust, but i have been using mine constantly, with two heavy cameras, and is more than adequate....great product....well done
