First of all I must say that the service from 47th Street photo was fantastic, the delivery could not be faulted, tracked by Fedex, it took four days from order to delivery and was recieved in a stout box with the lens in its own Opteka box well packed inside. My concerns of dealing with a company outside the UK were unfounded after this (for the record I have ordered futher products from 47th streetand again recieved the highest service). Inside the box was found a brief instruction leaflet for use of the lens, a lens mount adapter that screws onto the base of the lens the usual lens protection caps and a special free gift.
The lens is a heavy piece of kit for its size, body is made of metal in fetching black and white with the end plate of a vey soild piece of plastic. The action of the focus ring is very smooth with just the right amount of drag to make focusing easier. It really does feel quality, even compaired to the Nikon and Sigma glass that I also own, so I am unable to fault the build.
Now, this is a fixed apeture lens, the camera (D40 & D5000) will not "meter" nor recognise this lens. You are on manual and the focus is a bit difficult to master at first as without aid of a split focus screen (those were the good old days!)you are relying on your eye to get the sharpness, but both of my DSLR`s auto focus lights will illuminate when the image is percieved to be "in" and I have found this to be reasonably accurate when viewing the images taken. Anyhow, my Corel photoshop soon sorts out any disasters. One thing that is important is that your viewfinder has to be set up as per the camera handbook for sharpness of focus as this will give less than satisfactory results. I have not used "live view" with this lens as you really need the eye in the viewfinder.

For the few shots taken so far I can tell that this is not an easy piece of equipment if you're not accustomed with manual photography. But the quality is pretty good - for the price. I don't mind saving some 1000-2000 for the trouble of thinking a bit of the exposure. The fixed aperture of 6.3 gives a very narrow field of depth and puts a bit pressure on focusing, but you get the feel of it fairly quickly.

All in all: A very solid piece of tele-lens for advanced hobbyist. Quality of craftmanship is above average for this price range.

I am sorry to say this was the bad buy. I was of the opinion that this lens was as good as the Sigma, but it as far from the truth. Not only that 49th were not very forth coming.
