Book Description

In this innovative new study, Frank McDonough provides a clear account of opposition and resistance towards the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1945 and presents the historical debate surrounding this important aspect of the history of Nazi Germany. The book concentrates on the individuals and groups that resisted and opposed Nazi rule, including the Christian churches, industrial workers, youth groups and sections of the army, whose resistance culminated in the assassination attempt against Hitler in July 1944.

McDonough's study of what exactly constitutes resistance and how widespread the opposition to Hitler in Nazi Germany really was makes fascinating reading. McDonough clearly outlines the different historiographical arguments and investigates all groups within German society that had the potential to oppose the Nazi regime.
The book gives a good summary of the resistance movements within Germany and challanges the reader to answer the questions about resistance to the Nazis that are still hotly debated by historians today. A brilliant resource for studants studying the topic!

I know it's not a revision guide but it gave the essential background detail that my teacher had missed out. It really helped.

A level opposition condensed really well....a really good read, a level and under grads this is useful. I found this a fast paced and straight forward account of opposition, also the documents were really relevant to coursework....its not what's there its what you do with them. Good book.

This book is exactly what we needed for my son's history A level, but it is very short. It really doesn't go beyond what's required for the coursework - more detail and some narratives would be a great addition and would make it more useful long term. As it is, this is a read-once book for a single tactical purpose. It doesn't compare with works like Denying History, which is one of my favourite sources on this period not least because it explains why there is so little hard documentary evidence of intent.

Good detail but you can only use it for opposition and resistance. if you revise by reading this would be a great book for you.
