One may know this young French Countertenor's work in the Baroque world of Handel and Vivaldi, and other 18th century opera masters. Here is an entirely different dream-world, the 19th century French Romantics and Impressionists.One still hears the exquisite control of the melodic line in this repertoire, but Philippe finds also a marvellous range of vocal contrasts and shades of expressive colouring to flavour his interpretations. These are wedded to some really sensitively moulded piano accompaniments in his partnership with the piano accompaniments of Jerome Ducros. Three of the songs have also the participation of an extra instrumental line. Playing these, with stylish finesse, are flautist Emmanuel Pahud, cellist Gautier Capucon, and violinist Renaud Capucon. Some may find these performances "an acquired taste", or listening to the entire disc at one sitting rather too much of a good thing. If you would like to sample it before buying, you can see Phillipe performing a number of these items on YouTube.He is such a sweet guy, you will fall in love instantly !

As you may have seen elsewhere, most of the reviews of this CD say that Jaroussky's voice is not expressive enough for this repertoire but to me, that's the whole point. Those who find (I can't be alone?) mainstream voices (soprano, tenor etc.) a little too, to put it politely, `artful' for something slight (but by no means shallow), will find Jaroussky's unaffected yet refined countertenor voice a perfect vehicle for these miniature songs. It is a rare pleasure to be listening to a stream of poetic little stories told so unfussily but affectionately as Jaroussky does in this CD, instead of being embroiled in someone's desires and emotions (there are a plenty of CDs in the world for that if that's what you want). Jaroussky's voice does show strain in places (thus 4 rather than 5 stars) but that's probably only amounts to 3&3/4 minutes out of 66. As the previous reviewer says, this may be an acquired taste. If you are not sure, close your eyes, open your mind and play the last track from the list above (in practice, you'll have to do this the other way round!). The title says it all: L'heure exquise (The exquisite hour). Go buy it.

Well I really liked and still like this.
He's not one of my favourite singers, nor is he my favourite counter-tenor, despite all the French awards (that would have to be daniel taylor, sorry Phil).
But this album is just stunning, and the accompaniment is...I don't know what to say ....ethereal? Perfect? Well, a mix of those two.
I DO like it when a native french speaker sings French. And I bought it for his version of Hahn's "L'Heure Exquise".
He sings in the mezzo range, so it's handy if you're also in that range and like singing along for learning, or just singing along.
A couple of rarer beasts on here too.
A very good purchase.

I bought this disc as a present for my wife, a soprano, since she is so delighted by Phillippe Jaroussky's voice. The "most alto" counter-tenor I have heard.
