If you want a small knife for cutting string, paper, thread, small vegetables etc and can't be bothered mastering the art of knife sharpening this is the knife for you.A couple of strokes on a soft sharpening stone and the Carbon steel comes up razor sharp and stays that way for a good time (depending on use obviously). Keep in mind this is a small knife with a blade thickness of just 1mm though so you are not going to get much heavier work done with this but then you can always get a size 6-8 for camping duties (1.5mm thickness) or a size 9 and above (2mm thickness) for bushcraft. I find this size sits very comfortable on three fingers (smallish hands) with the bottom of the handle shaped perfectly to "anchor" on my pinky. It weighs next to nothing, is UK legal carry and requires minimal maintenance. Yes, there may be better and more expensive knives out there but for value you will not beat an Opinel.

As far as budget pocket knives go Opinel are about as classic as they get. Using these things just transports me back to childhood and mucking about on a local beach, cutting ropes, whittling.

What I appreciate about these knives now is their performance and ease of maintenance.

For less than a tenner you get a knife with a reasonably comfortable wooden handle, this is cut from an almost circular section of wood so it very easy to grasp and causes vey little fatigue when gripping it tightly. The locking section is simple, which means almost unbreakable, a simple metal collar that twists to lock the blade open. The blade itself is carbon steel. This means it is pretty soft, will rust and can easily chip. Sounds like a deal breaker but wait.

I have a knife at home that has a 154CM blade which, although magnificient, is a real chore to sharpen as the metal is so hard. Not exactly useful in the field.

The carbon steel on Opinel knives can be easily brought to a very keen edge with a simple sharpening stone, something like the Fallkniven DC4 will do very nicely. In the field this is a godsend, you can spend a few seconds bringing the keen edge back, doesn't take much expertise or complicated gear, just a few strokes on the stone and you are back in business.

Opinel knives are one of these items that become a byword for their category. This is born from the utility of the design rather than any quirky thinking, these are absolute classics and worth a look

I was after the largest 'legal to carry knife' and thought this was the Opinel 6 (without the lock). It's in fact the Opinel 5 and is a tiny knife. So beware!

Better to buy the Opinel 6 & pop the locking ring off to make it legal - which is what I subsequently did.

Amazon service was exceptional - when I tried to return the knife they said keep it & still gave me a refund :-)

I failed to take account of the metric size stated when I ordered (me, I'm old fashioned and prefer feet and inches) and it is much smaller than I would have wished. But it is razor sharp and holds that edge. Next time I will be more careful and repeat the purchase with a larger model, but nevertheless this one is neat, fits the pocket well and can be carried everwhere without running foul of the law as an offensive weapon! Pity it doesn't have a locking blade as in the larger model.

Nice sized and UK legal (no lock). The carbon steel (rather than stainless) sharpens up effortlessly, and it's the classic opinel style and quality. Only issue is there is no spring or slipjoint mechanism meaning the blade can fold back with very little pressure. I can see why the locking ring models took off, but if you're careful it's a useful and attractive little pocket knife.

I bought the opinel no5 . This has a 6cm blade. This is a very good little knife. It's UK legal being under 3 inch blade folding and non locking. It's well finished and weighs next to nothing. Approx 10 grams. The blade has a razor sharp edge straight out the packet. An ideal little knife for camping it will easily cut through paracord or your tent wall in the event of emergency and can be used for food prep it will cut veg and raw meat. The blade doesn't have the strength to use this knife for prying but for general cutting / slicing duties it is excellent. You should note though that being carbon steel it will rust if not cared for. A Google search will tell you all you need to know. It's a great little every day pocket knife.

This knife is almost perfect for carrying around in your pocket.
The carbon steel blade is easy to sharpen to a razor edge and its simple and sturdy built. The only thing is that I felt that it was a bit too big for its size and not very pretty. So I took a grinder and cut a bit off the tip and sanded the handle down to a slimmer size. Then I just gave the handle some regular cooking oil and voila. A knife that fits my needs perfect, to a great price.

Be aware that, being carbon steel and not stainless, it does get miss colored VERY easily.

This is a great little carbon steel knife. It is well constructed, and very light.

It arrived so sharp that I could practically shave with it, and it fits into that little mysterious pocket in your jeans so it's always handy at work.

The blade is very thin, which in my opinion is a good thing - however if you use it to pry rather than cut, don't expect it to last very long.

In short, for the cost, you aren't going to get much better value for money.
