Where it all began 21 Oct 2006

Format:Audio CD
Its hard to believe the band that composed Lateralus wrote this isnt it?!

This is mostly an intelligent old skool metal album, but with a unique Tool twist. The live recordings are amazing quality.

This is an angry, angst ridden EP, and well worth the money, even if its only 6 songs. It is an awesome foundation for things to come.

And it contains songs that rank among Tools very best: Cold and Ugly, Hush

Good, but not great 19 Dec 2000
Format:Audio CD
This is Tool's debut release. It is a good mini album, featuring a hidden track. That said, do not expect it to sound like 'Undertow' or 'Aenima', because it doesn't. It sounds the way it does, not specifically because Tool dramatically changed their musical direction after this release, but because they decided to put their 'punkiest' songs on it. It is direct, loud and lacks the depth and dynamism of their subsequent releases. But that doesn't invalidate it, not by a long shot. These songs are great, and the band still play some of them live, which shows their attitude towards the release. There is a tendency to think of it as the 'other' Tool album, and to file it away under 'completists'. But this album is more than valid in its own right and is a great rock document. If you listen to their other material and then listen to this you will find yourself getting an amazing insight into the workings of 4 minds that are unlike any you are likely to meet in the course of your average day (unless of course your name is Justin Chancellor!).

Don't buy it first, but if you like the other Tool albums, don't be put off by what you read about this one. It rocks and it's hot and it's Tool!

To a seasoned observer, the incomprehension with which 'Opiate' is greeted by more recent Tool aficionadi is puzzling. To judge this record by earlier reviews, you might be forgiven for expecting 'Opiate' to sound radically different, even primitive, when compared to their later offerings. Indeed, I had put off buying this CD chiefly because so many people had suggested that it didn't measure up to the expected Tool yardstick.

The reality is that 'Opiate' is a grungier, less dour and less pompous incarnation of the group that would go on to capture the hearts of prog-rockers. Anyone who is a fan of '90s grunge, particularly its heavier outliers, will find much to appreciate.
