Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Denise Leigh and Jane Gilchrist, until recently two apparently ordinary suburban mums, get the chance to show off their previously hidden abilities on Operatunity: The Winners. Unlike their Pop Idol counterparts, though, who did all the hard work before winning, Denise and Jane now face an almost impossibly tough challenge to prove themselves in the rigorously exacting world of the professional opera singer. They've shown themselves to be competent musicians, but that's hardly going to be enough to cut it alongside Cecilia Bartoli, Renee Fleming or Angela Gheorghiu.

On the evidence of this album, the two sopranos may just make it happen. Certainly their voices are relatively undeveloped, and both have a lot of work to do before their sung French or Italian will begin to sound natural, but they have bags of natural talent and enthusiasm aplenty--qualities that shine through here even when diction or phrasing is less than secure. On the evidence of this selection of popular arias, it's Denise Leigh who has the more immediately appealing voice--her tone is attractively pure and sweet--whereas Jane Gilchrist is more forthright, but lacking polish. In the Figaro selections, Gilchrist's "Dove sono", for example, sounds a little forced in comparison with Leigh's more naturally legato "Deh vieni non tardar"; while neither voice gels especially well in the "Canonetta sull'aria" duet. Overall, nothing here is at all bad--but nothing is especially outstanding either. As a first entry on their respective CVs, it's a creditable achievement, and one that will hopefully lead to greater things in the future. --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars Operatunity Girls, 7 Nov 2003
This review is from: Operatunity The Winners (Audio CD)
Wow, quite amazing for 2 relative unknowns. This album made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
Amazing voices, amazing songs, I am sure this is only the first of many more albums to come.
Well done, it is a must listen to album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 11 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Operatunity The Winners (Audio CD)
Very accomplished collection from two newcomers (I'd say amateurs but that isn't how they come across). I adored the first three tracks - a truly 'hairs on the back of the neck standing on end' type opener. I didn't think it could get much better so nearly stopped at that point but as I was wallowing in a deep, hot bubble bath at the time I continued listening - and I'm glad I did. With the exception of the G&S track (not my cup of tea) I thought the choice of music was very good and nicely balanced. Would recommend to anyone after music to listen to whilst in a bubble bath!

4.0 out of 5 stars If you loved the TV programme, 16 Dec 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Operatunity The Winners (Audio CD)
As an "opera virgin" I was hooked by the TV programme Operatunity. This CD acts as a confirmation of the talent that these two ladies have. This CD is a "safe" choice of well established opera clips, which perhaps does not suit them both entirely but does let them establish themselves in an untried market place. It is well worth the money and, unlike some opera CD's, you can listen to the whole thing without getting bored. I love it - and if you loved the TV programme then its a must.
