From the Back Cover

Everyone manages processes . . . Everyone is an operations manager

“. . . integrates services and manufacturing operations further than has been done before in any Operations Management textbook. This makes the book ideally suited for an MBA audience; who come from a multitude of organizational settings.”
--Par Åhlström, Professor of Operations Management, Chalmers University of Technology

“This text places operations management clearly in context. I particularly like the emphasis on process management as a means of demonstrating the ubiquity of processes, even outside the traditional operations areas.”
--Dr. Alison Smart, Manchester Business School, University of Manchester

“This comprehensive text shows how persuasive, relevant and exciting Operations Management is to business and everyday life.”
--Stephen Disney, Cardiff Business School

5.0 out of 5 stars A very thorogh introduction to operations management, 6 Sep 2008
By Mr. Nicholas Dougan "Nick" (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I am using this text as part of a course on Operations Management - it was written primarily, I should think, for MBA courses and the like. So, while there are doubtless other books that go into more detail on certain aspects, it gives a comprehensive overview, backed up by many case studies and a CD with more materials, self-tests etc.

The authors, all of whom are associated with top-rated Warwick Busness School (WBS), take a holistic approach to operations management - it is not just about manufacturing operations but extends to operations in the core processes of service industries and to support processes - marketing, sales, finance, HRM, etc - in all types of business. (Many of the case studies are about service industries.) Design, delivery, development and direction of operations are covered. Almost all managers, Slack et al argue, are operations managers to some extent.

This is an excellent book, and one that would, I think, be useful in astand-alone way for those who don't have the luxury of following a course on the subject. If you are involved in managing any kind of process, and haven't had any formal training, then it is worth reading this book. If you are anything like me, just the first couple of chapters, covering such subjects as the "4Vs" and "operations performance objectives" will provide a simple, helpful framework for matters that you probably instinctively understand already.
