More About the Author

I suppose that I am the very definition of a sad Operations Management geek. It's been my passion, hobby, obsession and profession for.....well a long time.

Formally I am an Emeritus Professor of Operations Management and Strategy at Warwick Business School within its Operations Management Group. In previous incarnations I have been the Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of Service and Support Management at Cambridge University, Professor of Operations Strategy at Brunel University in London, and a lecturer in Management Studies at Oxford University. Initially I worked as an apprentice toolmaker in the hand-tool industry and then, after University, as a production engineer and production manager in light engineering and as a distribution manager in consumer products. I hold a bachelors degree in Engineering and Masters and Doctors degrees in Management, and I am a chartered engineer.

In recent years I have divided my time between being a University Academic (teaching, researching, marking, avoiding committees, etc.), Executive Education (working as an independent educator and through Duke Corporate Education and others), and being an author. But these three diversions are not independent of course; without academic research how can one speak knowledgably to Executives, and without the experience of working closely with practicing Executives how can one convey the scope and importance of Operations Management? Which is why I so much enjoy being a consultant, researcher and educator in so many sectors, including Financial services, Oil and Gas, Utilities, Retail, Professional services, general services, Aerospace, FMCG, and Engineering manufacturing. And writing about it!
