Product Description

An essential tool for those wanting balanced coverage of services and manufacturing operations management.

For Operations Management courses at both undergraduate and graduate level.

This book is intended to provide an introduction to operations management for all students who wish to understand the nature and activities of operations management.  Providing a clear,
well-structured and interesting treatment of operations management, the text provides both a logical path through the various operations management activities as well as the fundamental understanding of their strategic context.

This book strikes an interesting balance between the strategic and operational views of operations management and between manufacturing and service industry views of operations.  Nigel Slack’s Operations Management is THE authoritative, managerial view of the subject.

The text outlines the importance of operations and demonstrates how crucial it is in creating the products and services upon which we all depend.

This revised and fully updated edition of Operations Management continues to provide a clear, well-structured and comprehensive treatment of the subject, balancing a logical approach with the insights that come from real life operations examples and practices around the world.

From the Back Cover
Operations management is important, it is exciting, and it is challenging. It is concerned with creating the products and services upon which we all depend and creating products and services is the very reason for any organization’s existence, whether that organization be large or small, manufacturing or service, for profit or not for profit. Operations management is also at the centre of so many of the changes affecting the business world – changes in customer preference, changes in supply networks brought about by internet-based technologies, and changes in the extent of environmental responsibility that we expect from companies. This revised and fully updated edition of Operations Management continues to provide a clear, well-structured and comprehensive treatment of the subject, balancing a logical approach with the insights that come from operations practice around the world. New edition features:
  • Greater emphasis on the important topics in current operations practice, such as Supply Chain Management, Internet-based technology, Process design, and Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP)
  • A Glossary that provides brief explanations of the key terms used in the book
  • An updated set of boxed examples from real operations, including one to begin each chapter and establish the broad principles that will be covered
  • More 'Worked examples' covering both qualitative and quantitative techniques
  • An extended set of 'Critical Commentaries' that propose alternative views to those discussed in the chapter.
  • A set of 'Study Activities' at the end of each chapter. These are short exercises, often involving some degree of investigative work, that can be tackled in groups or individually
  • An enhanced Companion website that includes student study guides, many more short case examples with worked answers, hints on how to approach the study cctivities and new multiple choice questions.
Classic features: THE authoritative, managerial view of the subject A clear structure based on a model of operations management that distinguishes between design, planning and control, and improvement ‘Boxed’ examples that explain the issues faced by real operations in both Service and Manufacturing organizations Case Exercises that provide opportunities to test your understanding Recommended further readings, now with comments on their content and use 'Key Questions' at the beginning of each chapter with matching 'Summary Answers' at the end This market-leading book is vital reading for everyone interested in operations management whether studying for undergraduate and masters degrees or professional qualifications.

This review is from: Operations Management (Paperback)
Superb book. Clearly written, easy to understand and excellent to reference now and in the future. I received a First Class Honors by studying this book so Nigel et al rates the best value for money and excellent for study and understanding the topic. First year through my MBA and this book is all I need.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a brilliant book., 4 Feb 2000
By r.williams@wlv.ac.uk (Wolverhampton - England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Operations Management (Paperback)
Slack et al. Have out done themselves this constantly revised book has got everything that I needed to know at Operations Management. Not only that but it's really easy to read...

As part of my final year project I spoke to an 'Actual' Operations Manager and him and I completely understood one another. I spoke to him about things that I had come across in this book and he had not heard about. It was very useful and it got me very high marks in the module I was doing. It covers all relevant subject areas to give to great ideas, and the case studies are excellent example of operations in work. I have no hesitation in recommending this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Operations Managament, 28 Dec 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Operations Management (Paperback)
The book on Operations Management by Slack et al was an excellent guide into the area of Operations Management. It is filled with interesting theory on the subject area and also provides pointers into related areas such as Marketing, Strategy and Organisational Behaviour. It is one of the most well-written course books I have come across and is an achievement by the authors as they not only manage to present OM in a concise way but also can link the theory to theories in other domains in a coherent fashion.

Over time, the book has proven to be one of those course books that have turned into frequently used reference books in real-life situations. Not many of my course books have managed to pass this usability litmus test.
