The details surrounding Operation Vula, which was an ANC plan to have a structure in place in South Africa to forcefully overthrow the apartheid regime and that ran concurrently with the first stages of the negotiation process, are little-known, and so too are the players involved. Author's title tells with emotion and humility, of her own and other's roles, in what was the last and largest ANC operation against the apartheid regime.
Born 1948 in Arnhem, the Netherlands, Conny was chairperson of the Dutch Anti-Apartheid Movement between 1969 and 1994 and worked as a journalist
In 1992 she made her debut as a writer with 'Operation Vula', an autobiographical novel about her involvement in the South African underground resistance. (This was translated into English by Jacana Publishers South Africa - see Amazon.com)
Press: 'Operation Vula is compelling reading by a talented writer and thinker' The Cape Times
'Not least in importance is her courage in being able to tell not just apolitical story, but a love story that was inextricably bound up in it - her own.' Mail and Guardian
This was followed by the novel 'The Goat Slaughterer' (also autobiographical), The Amazon of Dahomey (short stories) and Zwavel, a novel about South Africa after apartheid.
Press: horrifying story. From first till last page a psychological thriller, big themes as collaboration and resistance worked are out with almost natural ease.
In 2000 she published 'Abraham's Rage', 'The Irresistible Bastard' and 'The Scandal'. This is a trilogy about the Abraham family and is based on the authors own family history. The trilogy had 25 print runs and more than 120.000 copies were sold.
In 2009 she published 'De Handelsreiziger van de Nederlandsche Cocaïne Fabriek', which has so far sold over 40.000 copies. It was translated into English by Jonathan Reeder and, as 'The Cocaine Salesman' is being published on 11/11/11 by Haus Publishing in London.
Conny gives lectures throughout the Netherlands about writing and the intensive research involved in writing her novels.
