Book Description

7 Jun 2010 Mythical 9th Division
Something strange is happening in the Welsh mountains. It should be the middle of summer, but Snowdonia has been beseiged by blizzards and ice storms. A company of Arctic-trained soldiers sent to investigate has disappeared and the only remaining hope is a secret troop of yeti agents - the Mythical 9th Division. Fully illustrated, and with a four-page comic-strip introduction to each chapter, this exciting first story also comes with a top-secret yeti code-breaker!

Book Description

Three yetis are about to save the world in this hilarious new series by Alex Milway.

About the Author

Alex Milway has always enjoyed making up stories and, after leaving art college, he discovered that he liked to write and illustrate them as well. His interest in furry creatures first reared its head in the The Mousehunter trilogy, where weird and wonderful mice ran riot all over the world. With Operation Robot Storm, the fur quota got even bigger, as he had to master the art of drawing a troop of yetis whose main purpose was to save the world. Alex is now a full-time author-illustrator, who suffers from furballs and works from his home in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Armed, Dangerous, and Covered in Fur! 20 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback
Operation Robot Storm is the first of his new series wherein a hairy band of heroes (and their human friends) secretly save the world from a mad array of supervillains. The whole series is pure all-ages adventuresome fun. Action, comedy, cool gadgets, danger, twists, yaks sailing through the air: this is creativity that will spark any kid's imagination, and will keep Mom, Dad or whoever is reading to them amused. The series is perfect for reluctant readers or kids graduating into chapter books. Each new chapter opens with a few pages of comic book before blending into well-illustrated prose, and the educational content is present but never preachy.

Rather than summarize the plot of Operation Robot Storm, allow me to recommend viewing the promotional trailers on YouTube. They show what the book is about, and give a flavor for the style in which the story is told. My kid has watched each a couple dozen times, and he has gone and hooked his cousin and a friend on the Mythical 9th.

Any book comes with a few niggles, but when the most salient detraction that comes to mind is a typo, it's best to just skip to the seven-word summary: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY CRITICAL MICK AND SON.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Funny ^_^ 11 Oct 2012
By stealthmidget - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I admit, I picked this up for the goofy illustrations. This book starts every chapter with about 2-4 pages of comic book panels then picks up the story with text seamlessly. The art is very cartoony when dealing with the yeti main characters, but the diagrams of the equipment and the villain's lair are really detailed.

The world is what I ended up having the most fun with, though. The idea is a clever take on a modern monster mash. Most times when that happens, the author just takes the horror out of a horror story. Dracula drinking blood substitutes, for example. But with these guys, abominable snowmen are British secret agents. How can that not make you smile? There are even eight other 'divisions' including the North American Sasquatch, and mermen and the Australian yowie in the next book.

Despite all the silliness, though, I really enjoyed how well it was written. I have a soft spot for children's books, so I'm probably biased. And this /is/ a children's book. The running yak gag is really the only bad symptom I noticed, though. I had fun reading it, and I look forward to seeing more of this world. It seems like he can go many more places with this setup.

I recommend this for anyone with a good sense of the silly ^_^
