Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Blake Edwards's delightful 1959 comedy, Operation Petticoat, stars Cary Grant as a World War II submarine captain whose preference for by-the-book command reluctantly yields to certain realities. Chief among those is that Grant's first officer (Tony Curtis, who impersonated Grant that same year in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot), a shameless hustler, is better than the Navy at delivering whatever supplies the ship and crew need to keep going. But when Curtis sneaks a handful of Philippine refugees and several gorgeous nurses onto the all-male sub, the skipper not only has to cool down his crew but deal with an unexpected feminine influence on ship protocol. The film is a great deal of fun, sprinkled with the director's trademark sight gags (including one of Edwards' best, involving a torpedo and a jeep), and graced with his unmistakable lilt. Grant is in great form, his comic brilliance almost impossibly effortless. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Synopsis
The skipper of a down and out submarine survives on the efforts of his junior officer who seems to be able to scavenge anything. Includes the original theatrical trailer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cary and Curtis make a wicked team!, 17 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This is one of the great classics and if you're a Cary Grant fan then this is simply a must see.

Cary Grant comes as the submarine captain who is landed with Tony Curtis as his "supply" officer. Tony's methods of acquisition are not always orthodox. At one point, a make-shift casino in the moutains is referred tactfully as the supply station.

Things get complicated when the men rescue a band of US Nurses from an island, but its on eof those laugh a minute movies which you can't regret.

Director: Blake Edwards.

n.b. watch "some like it hot" to see Tony Curtis do an impression of Cary Grant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cary Grant at his best, 5 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This is possibly one of my favourite Cary Grant movies. He is absolutely hilarious as the long suffering captain of the Sea Tiger a submarine that has been attacked by Japanese planes.

Tony Curtis stars as Holden his smooth talking lady loving aid who spends his time getting up to all sorts of mischief especially with one of the five nurses who join the crew on board.

The addition of the women create hilarious results. Check out the engine room scenes for a good example of this.

This is one of those feel good movies that you should watch with your family on a sunday afternoon. It will give you a lot of laughs and has a real feel good factor.

The fact that it doesn't have to resort to distastefulness, violence and bad language makes it all the better.

Oh and I don't think you will have never laughed as much as when you see a submarine that's PINK!! Brilliant.I highly recommend this movie.

You get a great comedy with Carry grant and Tony Curtis. Along with a great cast you see what life in a submarine can be like. Director Blake Edwards is a master at this sort of movie.

Tony Curtis is Lieutenant Nicholas Holden, an executive officer that is not too ept at sea duty but makes a procurement officer with unique abilities and methods of obtaining needed parts. Toss in a few nurses, some goats and you have the makings of an interesting situation.
