Product Description

Meet Rupert Hood. Every day, he joins the sweaty commuters travelling to Putney, in south-west London, where he has a seemingly dull job as an estate agent.

But this property company is not what it seems. And neither is Rupert.

It is a front - for the UK's intelligence service.

When a series of deadly terror strikes begin, Rupert swings into action.

But he faces a test as challenging and deadly as any in his career.

The terror plot leads not to al-Qaeda, or any other known threat. It leads to Big Mama, a former sex worker who built up her own criminal empire in Thailand before going global.

But Big Mama is a woman with a grudge - and not just against the pimps and sex traffickers who ruined her youth.

And as Rupert is about to discover, Operation Herod is a threat to all mankind.

Operation Herod is a brilliantly fast-paced, gripping action thriller in the style of the great masters of the genre - Ian Fleming, Len Deighton and Jack Higgins.

Andrew Cartmel's roller-coaster thriller has been widely praised.

"With a luckless spy and a formidable femme fatale, Operation Herod is a bright and fast-moving entertainment of double lives and double-dealing. The spirit of the 60s espionage thriller takes on new life and vigour in the hands of Andrew Cartmel." - Stephen Gallagher

''Cartmel's writing is a Heckler & Koch automatic wrapped in expensive lingerie. Brutal, exciting, engaging and witty. In the words of a woman who knew her spies: 'Nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest." - Guy Adams, best-selling author of The Change.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Thriller. 6 Aug 2012
By Nelson
Format:Kindle Edition
The cover and style of this thriller makes it look very much like a 1960s/1970s classic from the likes of Ian Fleming and Len Deighton. And while it is debatable whether Andrew Cartmel is really in the same league as those masters, he has written a very slick book which cleverly updates the formula. An undercover agent has to work out who is behind a series of terror attacks, and gets sucked into the plot of a criminal mastermind. The plot is well put together and the pace seldom flags. A good page turner/summer read. It's nice to see some new blood adding to great tradition of great British thriller writing.

This book takes the well known concepts of many of its spy-novel predecessors and turns them on their heads, to amusing and engaging effect. While playing with your preconceptions about typical spy-hero characters, Andrew Cartmel doesn't forget to make his characters engaging and credible - and also human and fallible, something sometimes missing from the genre.
The story moves quickly and develops well, with some original and clever ideas from the villains and a good "false dawn" before the end. The concept of "secret identity" is touched upon as well, I enjoyed seeing the hero's frustration at having to be subordinate to his foolish childhood rival whilst undercover.
All in all this was a fun and enjoyable book which hopefully heralds the start of a series of adventures for Rupert Hood and his team from the Estate Agents.

5.0 out of 5 stars WATCH OUT! 15 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a very well-paced and entertaining thriller. It's full of quirky ideas and clever plot twists and it glides along so swiftly and so stealthily that it's a bit of a surprise when you realise you've reached the end.

My only regret is that the wonderfully conceived Big Mamma doesn't receive more time to express the reasons for what she's doing. It would have been fascinating to hear from her own lips how a very understandable sense of injustice has turned into a monstrous crusade.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairish
I quite enjoyed this book but I must say it got a bit ridiculous towards the end but I enjoyed the banter between Rupert and Minerva. It's still a fair read.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit dull
This is not the most riveting read. I found it somewhat simplistic in style and quite dull. I could not get past the first third of the book.
