Book Description

11 Aug 2011
The best collection of military, espionage, and adventure stories ever told. The Dialogue Espionage Classics series began in 2010 with the purpose of bringing back classic out-of-print spying and espionage tales. From WWI and WWII to the Cold War, D-Day to the SOE, Bletchley Park to the Comet Line this fascinating spy history series brings you the best stories that should never be forgotten. Garbo was the British codename of Juan Pujol Garcia, perhaps the most influential spy of the Second World War. By feeding false information to the Germans on the eve of the D-Day landings he ensured Hitler held troops back that might otherwise have defeated the Normandy landings. This allowed the Allied push against the Nazis in Europe to begin. Amazingly, Garbo's cover was never broken and he remains the only person ever to have been awarded both the British MBE and the German Iron Cross. After the war Garbo faked his own death and fled to Venezuela with a mistress, where he later opened a book store. Ironically, his family in Spain only found out he was still alive when this book was published - Garbo having failed to realise it would also be translated into Spanish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Garbo - The Spy 27 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
Operation Garbo: The Personal Story of the Most Successful Spy of World War II

This book gripped me from start to finish - I just could not put it down. It was very informative and it was also amazing that what was happening to this person was in fact actual life and not pure fictional adventures. How this man could create a network of spies is truely brilliant, the detail is fantastic. To be decorated by both sides is truly astounding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Double Agent 21 April 2012

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A superb book telling the full story of the spy who worked his magic for the British for almost all of WW2 and at the same time convinced the Germans that he was actually working for them. He succeeded in his work so well that not only did the British awarded him a medal but so did the Germans! An amazing story, especially so, I imagine, if you are a German.

I have read many biographies/ autobiographies on WW2 espionage which is an area that really interests me and had I been born many decades earlier, I would have loved to haved played a part in.

I felt that whilst this book was good on detail and the inclusion of the actual communications betwen Juan Garcia and his contacts at the Abwehr, I found the chapters written by Nigel to be quite dry - it reminded me of studying for History A level and no book has done that for me in he last 25 years.

By comparison, the chapters written by Jaun are really colourfull and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about his person account.

Probably one of the most well known of the WWII spies. This man had an extraordinary life and played a dangerous game being awarded the highest decoration from the Nazis and Great Britain for his work.
