Product Description

On May 24, 1960, David Ben-Gurion, prime minister and founder of Israel, stood before the Knesset and made a startling announcement: "I have to inform the Knesset that, some time ago, Israeli security forces found one of the greatest Nazi criminals, Adolf Eichmann, who, together with other Nazi leaders, is responsible for what they termed the Endl?sung [Final Solution] of the Jewish question, in other words, the extermination of six million European Jews. Adolf Eichmann is already in this country under arrest and will shortly be brought to trial."

Operation Eichmann, as the pursuit, capture, and trial of the notorious Nazi official was known, stunned the world. Its success was due largely to the unceasing efforts of one man, Zvi Aharoni, an experienced Mossad operative who was a skilled investigator and interrogator. He tracked Eichmann to Argentina, secured photographs that established his identity, and was a key player in the plot to kidnap the exiled war criminal and bring him to trial. Above all, as the sole person to interrogate "the architect of the Final Solution" after his capture, and the man who convinced Eichmann to admit his identity and face trial in Israel, Zvi Aharoni is the only one who knows firsthand what Eichmann actually said—a controversial subject often misrepresented in previous accounts.

Now, for the first time in Aharoni's own words, comes the extraordinary true story behind one of history's most famous manhunts. Daring, dramatic, filled with episodes of breathtaking suspense and intrigue, Operation Eichmann is also a powerful chronicle of conscience and of the never-ending search for justice.

All the intricate planning and preparation, the relentless pursuit of evidence, the constant need to justify time and expense are related with exacting detail. As events unfold, various political, personal, and philosophical issues come into play, focusing not only on a top secret mission, but on the priorities of individuals—as well as nations—during the Cold War era. The startling complicity of those who gave refuge to and provided safe passage for fleeing Nazi leaders reveals an expansive network of global proportions, while the seeming indifference of others is equally chilling. Adding to the tension is the emotional toll imposed on the participants, for whom the operation became a constant exploration of the theme of justice vs. revenge.

A probing, deeply personal account of a real-life undertaking to rival the most breathless cloak-and-dagger fiction, Operation Eichmann is a powerful, compelling reading experience.

"Operation Eichmann has been covered by a wide range of 'literature.' However, in all the books written so far there have been certain constraints which have meant that the writers were not able to present a full and correct picture of what actually happened. There is no doubt that this book represents an objective and authentic addition to the tale of heroism that led to the capture of Eichmann and his standing trial in Israel. Without Zvi Aharoni and his friends, we would never have achieved what we did."

4.0 out of 5 stars Come in 45326, your time is up. 31 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The hunt, capture and subsequent trial of SS member 45326 Adolf Eichmann reads like a good spy thriller at times and that's because it is. There's secret cameras hidden in briefcases and the Israeli agents stalk their prey by spying through a hole in the tarpaulin cover of a truck after tracking him down through the back streets of residential Buenos Aires. You can feel the tension building as they get closer to the abduction.

The book starts off by giving you a bit of the background story of the author and an insight into the structure and workings of the various branches of the Israeli secret services. The author Zvi Aharoni was a member of the secret service team who researched, planned and carried out the abduction of Eichmann so you are getting the story from the "main man" who was there so it's going to be a reliable account.

There are a few surprises in the book such as how one of the top men in Mossad didn't think it was worthwhile following up a red-hot trail on Eichmann. This was later proved to be sound so they could have had him much earlier. Also, there is a lot of distrust and almost animosity at times between the high ranking members of the secret services which is revealed in the book.

The book ends with a brief summary of the trial and follows up what became of Eichmann's family who were living with him in Argentina. There are more revelations here: his youngest son takes a very different view of his father than that held by his older sons. Very interesting. I am now going to find a book which covers the trial in more detail.

This book was a free download for the Kindle when I got it and I'm definitely glad I gave it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars An insider's story 26 May 2011
By Maria TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Written by one of those who were involved in the extradition of a Nazi war criminal it gives the details of this process. It includes the many difficulties , false leads, sheer frustration & many boring hours of hidden observation necessary to achieve the objective. The author praises not only those members of his team he can name but also gives credit to those who would be in danger if they were named no matter how small a part they played ,often without knowing any details of the plan. That Eichmann tried to pretend he was only doing paper work when there was clear evidence otherwise shows just how truly evil he was. There is hope for the future in his youngest son & his family as they seem so very different from him, & it was good that this was included. Altogether a story that needs to be told of a time which must be remembered & how justice seekers are the real heros. Essential but not pleasant reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sobering stuff! 30 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I saw this book come up I decided it was time that I learned more about these events. I was too young to have any memories of Eichmann's capture & trial, but I've known the basic history. This is a well written account of the events. The follies of human nature are laid bare in this account, & I wonder if leads hadn't been ignored how much sooner he may have been apprehended.
At the end of reading it, I am left saddened yet again by human nature & how easy it is to justify to oneself that following orders is reason enough to commit atrocities. In any other circumstances Eichmann may have been a completely ordinary boring little man. This in itself should be a lesson to us all!
I think this book is well worth reading, it sheds light on the actions and attitudes prevalent at the time & the reasoning of the people who felt they had to bring war criminals to justice, when so many had turned a blind eye & colluded with them to evade capture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book explaining why so many nazis got away 29 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great book. I always wondered how all these nazis had such great lives in Argentina and brazil and this book made it clear. Basically Israel was fighting for it's life against the Arabs and so didn't have any resources to send after old nazis as the enemy had changed. Argentina pretty muched welcomed the nazis with open hands but as the author notes they also let in lots of German Jews before so it's a mixed slate.

I'm just glad the Israelis got him and gave him real justice.

Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an extremely interesting book written from first hand experience . An insight into a different time when information was not easily available. interesting to read how there were no available photos of such a prominent figure and how hard the agents worked to achieve their goal. Recommend this book highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Gripping Account! 22 Jan 2013
By John
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Probably the only realistic account of the operation that was mounted by Shin Bet / Mosad to kidnap and bring to trial Nazi butcher Adolf Eichmann. This book concentrates on the operation to find the wanted war criminal and kidnap and extract him from Argentina back to Israel where he was eventually tried and hanged for his crimes.

This book gives a fantastic insight into the newly formed Israeli secret service, the politics and the mistakes that nearly allowed Eichmann to escape justice. Most importantly it focuses on operative Zvi Aharoni who's dedication was the key factor in the success of the mission.

Gripping read, highly recommended!
