5.0 out of 5 stars Covert from sixty years., 30 Nov 2004
By A Customer
I found this book astonishing in its depth of research especially as the operation has been covert for sixty years. But through the support of Raymond Baxter (a F/Lt during the operation) this little known story has at last been told.
I love the book because it has many previously unreleased photos, it hasn't put a new slant on an old story - this story has NOT been told before, and what makes it more impressive, it is a Spitfire story.
This is a book about Spitfires blowing up V2 rockets, div-bombing in bad weather and then an exploration into the men who flew themselves - the handle-bar Moutaches and great bravado. Operation Big Ben is a total classic. Totally recommended. A story as important as the Dam Busters Raid or the Battle of Britain. Well worth the money this one, and has a great Michael Turner dustjacket of Baxter's aircraft dive-bombing. Wow.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story of true heroes, 8 Sep 2006
This book reduced me to tears. It may be fact, fact, fact and even Raymond Baxter says in his introduction that it doesn't make light reading because of that, but it is a book about an operation hardly mentioned. About real men. You see their faces in the photo section and hear their stories through the narrative and Baxters memories. A masterpiece.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spitfires Against V-2's, 8 Jun 2006
By James Doucette "US Army Retired" (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Operation Big Ben consists mainly of the edited war diary entries of the Fighter Command Spitfire Squadrons involved in operations against the V-2 launch sites commencing in September 1944. These were 229 (renumbered 603 in January 1945,)303, 453, and 602 Squadrons. 124 Squadron which joined the anti-V2 campaign in February 1945 recieves scant attention. The Fighter Command Spitfires were used for several reasons. Foremost was their greater accuracy, given that the targets were in the midst of heavily built up areas of Holland. The authors also show that Bomber Command and the 2nd TAF did not wish to divert forces from what they saw as their main efforts. The casual reader might find this book a bit of a bore, but it does present a wealth of new information on this previously overlooked area of Spitfire operations.
