Product Description

"Welcome to a very secret world. Not many people know this, but inside a special, little red postbox in London, close to Big Ben, there exists a top secret department. It is so top secret that only the Queen of England, her Prime Minister, Spies and Cats know about it. And now you..." This book part of 'The Ministry of Letters' series recounts the adventures of the top-secret government department 'The Ministry of Letters', the place where all the letters and all the words in the world are created. We are introduced to this secret and then told the story of 'Operation Alphabet', one of the most famous adventures ever to have happened to the letters who work in the Ministry. The star of the story is Charlie Foxtrot, who starts school aged five and finds learning the alphabet confusing and strange. We learn how the members of the Ministrys Special Alphabet Service (SAS) set off on an adventure to Scotland to find Charlie and teach him, by song and rhyme, the alphabet and the joy to be found in letters and words. They succeed he goes to school the next day and gets full marks in a test and the world lives happily ever after! 'Operation Alphabet' also comes with a special jacket that folds out into an alphabet poster.

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I started to share this with a class of 5 and 6 year olds today, and their faces said it all. They were totally engrossed, and couldn't wait to hear more! They loved every minute of the story.

The Ministry of Letters is abosolutely TOP SECRET!!! It's the place where all words are made, and it's based in an old letter box somewhere near ... no, I can't give it away ... you'll have to buy the book to find out where it is! Its exact position is only known to the Queen, The Prime Minister, a few cats ... and readers of the book who are sworn to secrecy! hence the rather vague directions in this review! (We had to close the classroom door once we had read that bit ... just in case!)

Charlie has just started school. He knows a lot about all sorts of things ... but he has a test on the letters of the alphabet coming up ... and he has the dreaded ALPHABET-A-HEEBEGEEBIES! How can this problem be solved? How can the Ministry of Letters help? How does a motor bike chase involving a series of heroic characters help to solve the problem?

Although the presentation, and particularly the illustrations, may appear a little old fashioned, this is a fantastic book - and it kept the class of Year 1 children that I was covering for well and truly engrossed; to the extent that they wanted me to keep going even after the bell and can't wait to hear the rest tomorrow!!!

A fantastic book for 5 to 8 year olds, and well worth adding to a Christmas stocking!

Amazing edition 17 Nov 2011
By L. Goldsmith VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I can't believe how much thought and work has been put into this luxury edition of what is in essence a children's book.
The book is a pleasure to read and a pleasure to look at, however I felt the story was too complicated for my five-year old to follow.

Operation Alphabet is a beautifully designed hardback book for children. It's about a little boy called Charlie Foxtrot who has started school and is trying to learn the alphabet but can't quite get the hang of it. He then finds himself on an exciting adventure with some secret agents who teach him the alphabet. It's a witty, old-fashioned story that harks back to simpler times - not a computer or mobile phone in sight. I love it, and so does my almost 2 -year-old boy. It's a nice contrast to the garish modern children's books that we have. Recommended.

Wonderful story, meant for reading aloud!
This book is just fantastic. This story is simple enough; a boy is having trouble learning his alphabet, so who better to help him then the letters themselves? Read more
