Book Description

3 Dec 2010 0471687235 978-0471687238
Programmers don’t want to just read about the core concepts of operating systems. They want to learn how to apply the material by actually building applications. This new book motivates them by presenting numerous programming exercises at the code level. They are not only introduced to the OS concepts and abstractions, but also the implementation. Two design projects are integrated throughout the book that they’ll be able to follow to get them into the code. Self–assessment and review material is presented at the end of each chapter to reinforce concepts. These features help to make this an excellent resource for programmers to gain invaluable experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars be careful what you read and write 24 April 2012
By Annie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is the book that helped me survived OS class at Berkeley. It explains everything clearly and in depth. The author has a thorough understanding of the subject that very few people can comprehend. As many people have said, everyone can use a computer and navigate the user-friendly OS, but only a few can understand multitasking, multi-threading, parallelism, non-deterministic execution, synchronization, and mutual exclusion, which are inherent to OS management of resources, even when he/she has an excellent book or a good teacher at hand. It is just over their heads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful, vast and clear 28 Nov 2012

i have been readin this book for a few weeks now. i have been working in the file system for storage companies for almost a decade now. with improvements in the os landscape, i thought of refreshing my ideas. i have also discussed some of the topics which i read with some of my colleagues who are also pretty senior to myself. in general, i think the books covers a lot of detail, is well explained and up-to-date with the industry trends (to an extent). It builds a good platform to drive a concept or solution and then clearly explains the details. And i have been doing the exercise problems as well. Lot of the exercise problems are from the practical applications in the industry.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not seem very competent about the subject 12 Feb 2012
By Anna - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
While reading this book, I discovered that the author has a very strong opinion on a lot of things; however, this opinion is rarely called for and appropriate, which makes the book very annoying to read.
In terms of content, the book is full of unwarranted assumptions that a systems programmer just should not make. The book alternates between assuming that the reader is familiar with mutual exclusion, and then it goes on to explain how the format string of the printf command works.
Overall, the material is presented in such a way that a person who already knows everything will understand what the author wanted to say, but somebody who is willing to learn will probably find this book quite unrewarding.
