1.0 out of 5 stars Glacial tempi, 26 July 2011
By Doug Urquhart - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Opera Highlights 4: Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg (Audio CD)
I picked this disc up at our local library's book sale. Some excellent performers, plus a mixture of conductors, but for some curious reason all of the conductors favoured an extremely slow tempo. The worst offender was track three - the Fliedermonolog, sung by the superb Hermann Prey, but utterly destroyed by Kurt Woss, whose tempo suggested that Prey popped out for a smoke between bars. I found myself shouting "Get on with it!"

This one goes back into the donations bin for next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Getting ready for our 90th", 19 Dec 2009

Cincinnati Opera is celebrating its 90th anniversary June 23 and 26, 2010. James Levine conducts and James Morris is Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg. In preparation for experiencing this great Wagnerian Opera I felt that I had to become more familiar with the music, so that's why I ordered the Highlights album. It is perfect for my preparation.
