I guess most people looking at the disc would be a fan of Anna and the repertoire anyway so I will just concentrate on the transfer. I have the normal CD and the SACD version is more open and transparent but not by that much. If I were starting out then I would just buy this disc but after listening to the SACD I am not convinced it was worth re-purchasing in this format. There is nothing wrong with it and indeed it is a very pleasurable listening experience, Anna's voice is in fine form and I love just about every track but I could not really recommend anyone buying the SACD who owns the CD, not unless you have an exceptional system to extract something my Roksan K2 doesn't.

Maybe 3.5 stars, for the basic quality of the voice is lovely -- it has a nice quick vibrato and a pleasant warmth in the middle to upper-middle of its range -- but as other reviewers have commented, there is a sameness to the items in this recital that make it less compelling than debut recitals by singers like Rysanek and Price. I have seen Netrebko twice in live transmissions from the Met, and she's a fine natural actress (i saw her as Elvira in "Puritani" and as Gounod's Juliet) and the voice was in good condition, but here, about four years earlier in her career, her coloratura singing is a bit approximate even though she seems to be singing carefully (at the end of "Non mi dir" and in the florid sections of Lucia's first aria and cabaletta). The top of her voice can get a bit shrill, but that could be an artifact of the recording. Netrebko was 32 when this recording was made -- the reviews of her performances since have been positive, and she made a nice recording of Russian arias, so she grew as a singer. If you want to hear her in better voice, I recommend the Russian album -- texts and translations are provided, so you don't need to worry about the unfamiliar material and language.

The start of the disc is a bit rough. The voice is pleasant enough, well-produced with an even sound from the lower to the higher range. The trill, though, is hit or miss, not well articulated and the lack of a well-defined trill certainly is ontrusive in the selections that warrant one (such as the faust aria)
In short, the two Mozart arias are not elegant enough. She makes some heavy weather of the florid runs (especially in Non mi dir) which seems surprising given the other arias on the disc. The staccati are executed well though.
The french arias are also somewhat problematic. The aria from Benvenuto Cellini, arguably a bit of a signature role for her, doesn't work that well, and her Manon lacks humour and wit, and a touch of elegance. She doesn't really get behind the words, and has some funny pronunciations. The high D's in the Gavotte
also sounds uncomfortable.
Then we move to happier times. For me, she seems to connect to the two belcanto composers much better than the pieces that went before. Her Lucia scene perhaps lacks the ultimate degree of word painting and the sense of impending doom, but
it is extremely well sung, and the cabaletta well executed, although I didn't agree with her choices a few ornamental decisions. Her concluding high note is slightly better than on the Manon track, but those don't seem to be her "money-notes", as it were. They are more comfortable than the ones Angela Gheorghiu makes on her bel canto disc, but still...
The Sonnambula scene is, for me, almost a complete success. She sings well, manages to create a character in the process, and the florid work is done with grace and elegance, an element sometimes missing in the other arias. Again, the concluding accuto (E flat?) is done well enough, but not extremely comfortable.

a truly brilliant voice, this is a tour de force of vocal talent. this cd is worth its price alone for the outstanding aria from la sonnambula 'care compagne...'.
this was my 1st cd from anna, i recently got her new one Opera, it contains some of the same songs still i would recommend both - as she is a beautiful talented woman destined for legendary status in the world of opera.
i used to hate classical music, now i love it - this is one of my favourites - go on try something new

La Netrebko may be winning all the headlines, but this disc displays her faults all too clearly.

Her technique is flawed - no trills, smudged runs; her high notes unreliable (or simply flat in some cases);her tone rather heavy and slavic for the repertoire. None of this would matter if she had the intellect to bring the music alive, and knowledge of the necessary languages. But on this evidence, she hasn't. She may aquire those things. I hope she does - it IS a gorgeous voice. But here the music fails to sparkle and live as it should - her phrasing is peculiar and her diction poor, her style, in short is unidiomatic.

Her Russian album is a different matter and shows her at her best. But she makes heavy weather of the Romantic repertoire on this disc.
