I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Whilst no book can truely replace a teacher, this comes pretty damn close. This is first and foremost a practical book, emphasising the importance of regular practice. Uchiyama Roshi explains shikantaza in the most clear and simple way imaginable. He also details how to integrate Zen into your everyday life. If you are interested in Soto Zen Buddhism, then this is a must-buy.

An excellent book. 9 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Zen and everyday practice. Kosho's approach is relaxed, plain spoken and always pragmatic.
Reading this is as close as it gets to having a teacher with you. It conveys the thoughts and teaching of an man who wants to be sure his message is understood. Kosho's Opening the Hand of Thought will always be within my reach. Ready to be read again and again.

By M. D. Jenkins VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
An excellent general introduction on the practice of Soto Zen Buddhism by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi (1912-1998), late abbot of Antaiji and disciple and successor of the great Kodo Sawaki Roshi (1880-1965).

"When we let go of our conceptions, there is no other possible reality than what is right now. This undeniable reality is the reality of life fundamentally connected to everything in the universe. Right now is all important. Dwelling here and now, in this reality, letting go of all the accidental things that arise in our minds, is what I mean by opening the hand of thought."
-Kosho Uchiyama.

Another introductory work which may be of interest is Sitting Buddha: Zen Meditation for Everyone.

There are also a number of translations of Uchiyama Roshi's commentaries on works by Dogen available. These are The Wholehearted Way: A Translation of Eihei Dogen's "Bendowa" and How to Cook Your Life: From the ZEN Kitchen to Enlightenment. There is also a collection of commentaries on Dogen's Genjo Koan that includes a commentary by Uchiyama Roshi.
