This is a very accessable book, easy to read for the most part, engaging and full of personal and historical details so top marks for creating a well written book. As someone who has swum for the last 35 years of their life I still found the descriptions of how to alter strokes for the open water a little confusing. There are many drawings but I felt it could do with a few more to fully explain some of the finer points, like degrees of body roll for example.
Having said that I still think I'm getting value for money and would recommend the book, the true test of its worth will be in 5 months time after my first 5 mile swim.

Very useful book for those entering the open water. I am new to open water swimming and this book addressed many of the topics that I was unclear about (also avoided potentially embarrasing questions to the seasoned swimmers). The book is also an interesting read and full of historical facts.

Good content, erratic organization
Highly recommended, but be prepared to search a bit for some things. Clearly the product of someone who is predominantly right-brained.
