Book Description

What would you do if you were settling down for a quiet bedtime story and you realised that a crocodile had fallen into your storybook and was - not to put too fine a point on it - furious? Would you slam that book shut, cram it in the bookshelf for evermore or would you be brave enough to peek?

About the Author

When Nicola was 5 years old her parents banned Saturday morning television, and she has been drawing ever since. Nicola grew up in Singapore surrounded by the vibrant colours of the tropics and had not even heard of illustration as a career before she discovered the Illustration course at Edinburgh College of Art. Having graduated from ECA, Nicola has now completed a Masters in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Art, as well as pursuing a career in children's book illustration. She gets most of her ideas for children's books when she should be working on something else, and bases all of her characters on people she knows.

Both my 6 and 3 year old loved this book directly, even the first read turned into reading it 4 times. They loved that you have to 'do things' with the book - as different pages instruct shaking it, or rocking it. I liked how it sparked their imagination about what the crocodile (who escapes at the end) will get up to next.
One quite unique feature of this book, specifically for this age group, is that there are holes in it! There are quite a few books for 1-3 year olds with windows cut into them but from 3 on you're not really seeing that - it's almost like someone did the unthinkable and actually damaged it... one of the cheeky features of the book which they loved.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book with a bite 1 Dec 2013
Format:Hardcover
Clever telling of a story where a crocodile eats letters and words and duck tries to stop him, before he eventually escapes through a hole in the back. Large, colourful pictures sometimes over two pages, and lots of things to look at as the text is scattered across the pages at jaunty angles.Of course Emil Gravett has also done a book with a hole in the back, but the story is also different which makes it good fun.

The tale is good fun as it talks directly to the reader and the illustrations are lively and well done. The book is well made and can stand up to some rough handling! My son certainly enjoys it.

My grand-daughter loved being scared by this and I know it will become a favourite. The paper quality was also good and I feel the book will last well.
