NEW REMASTERED CD RELEASE FOR THIS CLASSIC ALBUM OF JAZZ / PROGRESSIVE ROCK by BOB DOWNES

BOOKLET WITH RESTORED ARTWORK, PHOTOS & LINER NOTES

ESOTERIC RECORDINGS are proud to announce the release of a newly remastered edition of the classic 1970 release "Open Music" by celebrated Jazz saxophonist and flautist BOB DOWNES.

Released in 1970 following his album for Vertigo, "Electric City" (also released by Esoteric), "Open Music" featured the leading lights of British Jazz Rock such as CHRIS SPEDDING, and featured music initially composed for modern dance. The resulting record appeared on Philips Records at the end of 1970. Outstandingly unique, the album failed to sell in significant quantities and became a highly sought after collector's item.

Re-mastered from the original master tapes, this Esoteric reissue is the debut CD release of "Open Music" and is long overdue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning 22 April 2010
By The Soft Machine Operator TOP 1000 REVIEWER

An album by a British Avant-Garde/jazz fluatist/saxophone player. I have never heard of him before I saw that Esoteric had released it, but it sounded intruiging.

The opening track is a 22 minute long piece of work commissioned for a ballet ini 1970. It consists of flute and woodwind riffs interspersed with frantic drums and percussion, before a rythmic bass kicks in and carries the song to it's conclusion which includes a whole ensemble of instruments. It sounds like the soundtrack to a long lost European art-horror movie (Directed by Jess Franco?) from the 1970s - and is breathtaking, eerie and dramatic, with the disembedied percussive sounds addding hugely to the atmosphere.

The second side features a couple of improvised flute solos plus ensemble playing, all with the same infectious, chilled out melodies & dramatic percussion. Integration has a hint of Chinese traditonal about it, while Contact is an urgent solo flute piece... And Ghosts in Space is as eerie as its title implies.

Well worth a listen if you're looking for something interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars great reissue 10 April 2012
This is a great album and it has waited a long long time for a reissue. The mastering seems to be done really well, and I can hear a lot of detail in the mix that's not apparent from listening to the vinyl.
The music is mainly jazz-avant-garde, heavily atmospheric. A lot going on in composition for the creation of soundscapes. The quality of musicianship is exceptional. I have listened to this album a million times (well, almost) and it still holds interest. If you like jazz, avant-garde, contemporary flute you will surely love this album. Great to see it back out, and I hope it alerts a new audience to the musical genius that is Bob Downes
