Synopsis

In Susanne Bier's achingly tender drama, filmed according to the tenets of the Dogme 95 collective, the fates of two couples are forever altered in the blink of an eye. Joachim (Nicolaj Lie Kaas) and Cecilie (Sonja Ricther) are a young couple on the verge of marriage. But before they can make it official, a car hits Joachim, leaving him paralyzed. It turns out the driver of the car, Marie (Paprika Steen), is the wife of Niels (Mads Mikkelsen), a doctor at the local hospital. Niels offers Cecilie a shoulder to cry on, and when a tormented Joachim sends her away, she takes Niels up on his offer. What begins as a harmless connection between two strangers quickly turns into something else, as Niels finds himself falling in love with Cecilie. Gradually, Marie begins to sense something is amiss, until the truth finally comes out, destroying their relationship in the process. A sudden change of heart from Joachim forces Cecilie to decide which man she wants to spend her life with. Like the most successful Dogme films (FESTEN, MIFUNE), Bier boldly mixes a melodramatic storyline with a documentary-like visual approach to create a work that is deeply affecting, and wholly believable.

4.0 out of 5 stars So good..., 7 May 2009
By Mrs. M. Daly "Milly" - See all my reviews

I watched this film this morning after having it sit in my dvd collection for several months. I'm so sorry that i didn't view it sooner. It was incredibly moving without being mawkish, and realistically depicted how seemingly good relationships can fall apart through changed circumstances. All the leads were excellent and the 'affair' was handled very well and didn't make villains of anybody. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Open Hearts, 26 Aug 2008
By Morris Day (Herts, UK) - See all my reviews
I came to this film, after the excellent After the Wedding (which is highly recommended to all) and as expected got another emotionally charged film, probably not was well acted, or as good a story as After the Wedding, but still a very good film all the same.

Open Hearts, without ruining the story, is about two couples who's lives are changed after a car accident. How a sudden impacted second can alters the paths of peoples lives. Showing life to be fragile and completely uncontrolable.

There are no villans in the movie, although I am sure people will form their own opinions on who they like / dislike and which actions the agree or disagree with based on their own lives. This film is a great study of human emotion. Although slightly predictable, Open Hearts still plays out well, an open ending leaving the viewer wanting slightly more.

Finally, about the actual DVD quality release - this isn't the best quality ever - the picutre only a 7/10 tops - but it's still watchable and a recommended watch. Extras include three deleted scenes with commentary, one which adds a great deal to the movie and must be checked out.

4 out of 5.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Realistic!, 3 Nov 2008
By N. Clark "Jazz" (UK) - See all my reviews

I couldn't watch the whole of this film. Its realism of detail is its strength but it may upset many who have suffered divorce.
It was good to get away from American over emphasis of action and over dependance on background music. This film just quietly works up the tension till it made us both very sad.
