March 2005 will see the 35th anniversary of the passing of Darrell Banks, brutally gunned down aged only 32 in 1970.
But he left us with a catalogue of some of the greatest soul music ever committed to wax. This set includes the Northern classics "Our Love Is In The Pocket", "Angel Baby" and "somebody Somewhere Needs You"(also covered by Ike & Tina Turner).
Even if you don't know the first thing about soul music, you need this album!

After a monumental 12 successful Solo projects, you'd think it was time for Darell Banks to cool his boots, but no, oh no, he's back: and this time its PERSONAL-ly soulful. Despite "Open The Door To Your Heart" being the title track and (don't ever get me wrong) an electricly sweet song, full of his trademark woeful vowel sounds, it is on "I'm Knocking At Your Heart, Please Let Me In" that Mr Banks really hits what the album is all about squarely (if not a tad cock-surely) on the head (if only for the reason that it is basically a medly of all the other songs). My only criticism of the song is the bass playing of Joe Hastings. Hastings guests on nearly all of Banks' "funky" albums; "Strip-Off Sunday", "Love In Transit", "Maybe You Do (Or Maybe You Don't) Know How (Sexy I Feel)" etc) and up till now his eight string slapping had been the low-end of my life. However on this i feel that Hastings attempt to Slap in double-time fell on huge bored ears.
Experimentation is on the cards too, with such tracks as "Baby Watcha Got"; which features an all male gospel choir. all in all then, one of the most soulful collections of the year, as well as the most exciting thing to come out of "a boat" for a long, long time.
cite it as a reason why you tied the knot.
