Biography

Hawkwind are an English rock band, one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. They are also a noted precursor to punk rock and now are considered a link between the hippie and punk cultures.

Formed in November 1969 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and styles of music. Critic Jim ... Read more in Amazon's Hawkwind Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Onward - To The Future 1 May 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
First thing I am going to say is, I only got this CD today and as with all music, it can take a while to sink in before it can be fully appreciated, this is only my first impression, I may edit it later on once I have fully digested it.

Next thing I would ask is, if you are of the mind that Hawkwind's last decent output was in the '70's, then forget it, give up here and go back to the Space Ritual (I may even join you in a while).

This is Hawkwind doing what they have always done, moved on, but keeping those waves of psychedlia washing over you. Did you like Blood Of The Earth? You are going to love this then. But it goes back further than that, I hear overtones of The Xenon Codex in some tracks, Choose Your Masques in others, but always it has moved on from there to form into a new beast altogether.

We have the hard rockers, the first track Seasons, kicks off as almost a metal number. We have lashings of ambience and we have some of the strongest (weirdest? Computer Cowards) Brock lyrics in many a year.

I am not going to do a track by track analysis or choose a favourite track just yet. With a healthy 21 tracks that would be a bit much for me. We have new versions of several older tracks (for me, Green Finned Demon stands out, you may prefer Death Trap or Right To Decide), a trait common to Hawkwind. But in addition we have a veritable treasure trove of completely new tracks.

Will this be looked on as a classic in years to come? Well, for my money, I think it is a vast improvement on Blood Of The Earth or even Take Me To Your Leader, both of which I enjoyed immensely. But hey, I only got it today, only time will tell.

In summary - well, if you have read this far you are going to buy it no matter what I say. Trust me, you will enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Onwards to a galaxy far far away.... 1 May 2012
By Mr Blackwell TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Its that time again, starship Hawkwind have entered Earth's atmosphere and deposited another batch of electronic soundscapes, spotted this in my local space depot(HMV) at a decent price, couldnt resist,so here i am listening to the latest Hawkwind sounds.

A 2 cd set total running time 80 mins or so ,real value for money, the production flawless ,the music just flows from the speakers, even better with the headphones on as the the Sci Fi rock/Ambient sounds wash over you, superb stuff.

I've listened to it several times now and at times im transported back to the likes of ALIEN4 (Seasons//The Hills Have Ears) while the likes of 'Electric Tears' takes me back further to LEVITATION.Highlights would be the aformentioned tracks while the Floydian 'Mind Cut' and excellent 'The Flowering Of The Rose' are standouts, indeed the latter one of the best tracks the band have done in a while(evoking memories of the ASTOUNDING SOUNDS...Disc).

As is the norm these days Captain Brock has delivered a few re-boots of old favourites, its unlikely any will ultimately top the originals but im quite partial to the spiky rendition of 'Death Trap' while 'Green Finned Demon' will always be welcome in any guise.

Truth be told i'd disembarked from the good ship Hawkwind when the likes of DISTANT HORIZONS and TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER failed to hit the spot, didnt even bother with the last dics,i might just have to invest in it now,if its anything like this.

A fantastic release from one of rocks survivors, take a trip to another world, buy and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONWARD FLIES THE BIRD 4 July 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been collecting Hawkwind albums since the early 70's and have only been disappointed once (Distant Horizons), so I was really looking forward to getting my hands on this one. So much so that I ordered copies from two different scources (Amazon delivered first).
I'm glad I did because it means one copy at home and one permanently in the car. I'm thoroughly delighted with it and am happy to have both cd issues and both vinyl issues. My favourite issue is the ltd. cd issue in a book. It doesn't contain anything of note more than the standard jewel case issue but it is a nice presentation and the discs are just that bit quicker to access than from the jewel case....and I wouldn't want to waste time when I'm getting one of these delights into the cd player.
No track by track account here. You can hear clips on the Amazon page. It's not the individual tracks that make this a great album anyway. It's the album taken as a whole.
The Hawkwind practice of slipping reworks of old songs in with the new may not always work, but it certainly does here, at least, it does for me because I happen to prefer these rework versions over the previous ones. The addition of these tracks gives the album more of a concert feel, something which is aided by the way the tracks flow together.
Just like a concert, we have new songs, old songs, high energy songs, slower songs and instrumental delights. All that is missing is the band saying 'Goodnight Folks and thanks for coming.' at the end. In a way, we also get an encore, because at the end of disc two there is a track which is untitled and not included in the credits, so don't switch off after Green Finned Demon because there is one more track to hear.
Well, that's not strictly true, since when that final track is played I find myself starting all over again. I've had this album for three months now and it is still the only cd I've played in the car in that time. Good job my wife likes it too.
