Every so often, an artist who you thought had given of their best already, steps up and surprises you. Only Trust Your Heart is just such an album from Dionne Warwick. Her catalogue of dozens of classic songs from the likes of Bacharach and David through to Stevie Wonder, The Brothers Gibb, Luther Vandross, Mr Manilow etc stretches back over 50 years now and have become part of the soundtrack of so many peoples lives. Her voice is certainly one of the greatest in popular music. Well stop the press....IT STILL IS!!! You can really feel that this recording draws on all 50 years worth of this ladies musical experience. The choice of songs, for the main stream 'Amercian Songbook' fans(ie Me), are not the usual instantly recognizable jazz standards that have re-emerged through the careers of Buble, Krall, Cullum etc....but they are really truly great songs, really well produced to transports you to the very classiest jazz club, oysters on the bar, chilled champagne...and real musicians....think The Cafe Carlisle in NYC (with an extention for the moments when a big flourish of strings are required). Ms Warwick's vocals sound really wonderfully fresh and are delivered with the light sophistication, phrasing and interpretation of a vocal master. If you don't know Dionne Warwick, start from the beginning with Bacharach and David, but also start from this album and work backwards. Loved it. Enjoy.
