5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Book 11 Nov 2005
Format:Paperback
This book is more than just novelty dog tricks - it also contains some useful information on the basics of dog training, such as using the clicker technique, why positive reinforcement is better than punishment and so on. It starts with the basics - teaching your dog to sit, stay, down etc. - before moving on to explain a myriad of tricks. The tricks are presented in increasing complexity, enabling you to train a few easier ones, such as paw, wave etc. before moving on. There are such a large number of tricks in the book that it will contain something for everyone, from the complete novice handler, to the more experienced trainer, from puppies to older dogs. By working through the tricks in this book you not only have fun working with you dog, but also reinforce the training basics, and end up with some fun ways to show off with your dog! This book demonstrates that you can teach an old (or young) dog new tricks! Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money, very disappointing. 17 Jan 2007
Format:Paperback
I bought this book so that I could have fun teaching my clever little mutt some fun tricks. I was excited when it arrived and started reading. The beginning of the book talks about the benefits of training in general and trick training in particular. I expected this to be the first one or two chapters but it turned out to be the first half of the book! The first 68 pages or so is inane ramble about why doing constructive things with your dog is important. I know it is, that's why I bought the book! That's why I take my dog to a dog training club every Wednesday night and to Flyball at the weekends and to Agility on Thursdays. I just wanted a book that could guide me through the steps of teaching my dog tricks. The method used to teach these tricks is clicker training. Although this is probably the most reliable method for trick training, my dog is deaf and there are no other methods/alternatives explained in the book. The most this book can give me is ideas as to what sorts of tricks I could try, not how to teach them and to be honest I could get those ideas online for free. I was very disappointed with this book, not only because of the lack of guidance (although a lot of dogs may respond to clicker training, the author should have given some consideration to owners of dogs who would not or could not be trained in this way), but mostly because the first half of the book is padding. I used to do that at school when I couldn't think of what to write, but no one was paying me to produce those essays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what is says on the tin! 20 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
Don't look ant further Yes, It IS the only book you will need on the subject.
It starts off giving the reasoning, then simple tricks, then more involved ones. It gives you the understanding of how to go about teaching your own tricks.
My 4 month old puppy has quite a repetoire now, and when he is having his 'naughty hour' I can re-direct his naughtiness into something constructive.
