Tommy Emmanuel is something of a guitar-player's guitar player, which is a polite way of saying that he is not as popular as he deserves to be. For a man who has such a lofty reputation amongst musicians, a man, moreover, who was rated as the best in the world by Chet Atkins, he is surprisingly little-known. I am a confirmed fan, but I still find him to be full of surprises. His live shows are heart-stopping - unbelievable technique, lots of percussive effects, bags of energy - a real emotional workout. He can also turn his hand to many different styles without any apparent difficulty, and without any trace of affectation or parody. He is a hard man to get a handle on.
And now, in complete contrast to what you will see on stage, he has produced a collection of the most lovely, original tunes on solo acoustic guitar. Sensitive and very personal pieces, cleverly harmonised, brilliantly executed - I cannot commend this album highly enough. If you have any fondness for guitar music then you should buy it - it may be one of the outstanding guitar records of all time.
Tommy knows who he is - he tours the world, he makes money. For myself, I am happy to enjoy his wonderful music. I just wish more people knew about it.
