5.0 out of 5 stars Only - the sensitive side of Tommy Emmanuel 30 Aug 2003
Format:Audio CD
Tommy Emmanuel is something of a guitar-player's guitar player, which is a polite way of saying that he is not as popular as he deserves to be. For a man who has such a lofty reputation amongst musicians, a man, moreover, who was rated as the best in the world by Chet Atkins, he is surprisingly little-known. I am a confirmed fan, but I still find him to be full of surprises. His live shows are heart-stopping - unbelievable technique, lots of percussive effects, bags of energy - a real emotional workout. He can also turn his hand to many different styles without any apparent difficulty, and without any trace of affectation or parody. He is a hard man to get a handle on.
And now, in complete contrast to what you will see on stage, he has produced a collection of the most lovely, original tunes on solo acoustic guitar. Sensitive and very personal pieces, cleverly harmonised, brilliantly executed - I cannot commend this album highly enough. If you have any fondness for guitar music then you should buy it - it may be one of the outstanding guitar records of all time.
Tommy knows who he is - he tours the world, he makes money. For myself, I am happy to enjoy his wonderful music. I just wish more people knew about it.

No, I'd never heard of him either - but there he was on stage at the guitar festival, charismatic, witty and totally engaging. And that was before he started playing!
Tommy Emmanuel is internationally recognised one of the world's great guitarists, despite "popular" obscurity outside his home country of Australia. ONLY brings together a number of beautifully constructed and wonderfully played tunes written while he toured the world, guitar in hand. Each piece has a story to tell and each conveys the story with flair, passion and precision. I struggle to categorise the style, as it adapts continuously both across the album and within individual tracks in many cases, however, if forced, I would say Only is acoustic guitar at its best - fluid, tuneful and inventive.
I have compared Tommy Emmanuel to Antonio Forcione - and I know of no greater accolade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fingers of fire 23 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I came across TE purely from a link on another great acoustic player's website and then happened to come across this CD in the Jazz (?) section of the local music shop. But jazz it aint. More along the lines of Leo Kottke's solo stuff, and every bit as impressive. Only a few players are blessed with genius to be able to carry off an unaccompanied acoustic guitar album and this is right up there with the likes of Martin Taylor's solo material. There's a fair bit of variety, ranging from laid back folk tunes to high-speed bluegrass picking. Recommended to all fans of acoustic guitar virtuosity. It's just a shame that players like TE, Don Ross, Dan Crary and Martin Simpson dont have the profile and success of considerably lesser talents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only amazing! 7 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD
I bought this album last year when I saw Tommy supporting Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. Strolling onto the stage dressed in dark clothing with a battered acoustic, I was unaware of his ability, having never heard him before.
Commencing with the jazz standard, 'Blue Moon' laced with a mastery of chordal knowledge and a technique I have rarely witnessed, he proceeded to cover most of the tracks on this album.
He really is a phenomenal player, using the wood of the guitar percussively and producing orchestral sounds from seemingly nowhere. He injects both depth and humour into his music at the same time.
The album is a testament to one guy's ability to hold you totally spell bound with just an acoustic guitar and an incredible talent. Play this CD late at night - it is a true stress buster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every note a pleasure 22 Jan 2004

'Only' is a solo acoustic-guitar album. If you want to have just 1 Tommy Emmanuel CD, I recommend a solo album and Only is ideal.
The album is a great representation of Tommy's live playing from exquisitely beautiful to breathtakingly exciting. In our house, we have a 400 CD collection and as with most people, only a few CDs get played regularly. 'Only' is one of a dozen played all the time and wins new fans in our house with our visitors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tommy who? 12 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I saw Tommy at a small venue in Gwent and without a doubt he is the most talented guitarist / musician I have ever seen. He was playing the music from this album and I was totally enthralled.
Having bought the CD I can say that it reflects the mans musicianship and ability, but not the thrill of a live performance.
Buy it now! see him live if you can. You will not be dissapointed.......if you are a closet guitarist, you will be blown away!!!!
