Danny Muldoon (John Candy) is a 38-year-old cop who still lives with his aggressively dominating mother (Maureen O'Hara). When he meets and falls for Theresa (Ally Sheedy), a young woman who works in a funeral parlour, everyone advises him against falling in love - especially his brother, who would much rather Danny stayed home to look after Mum.

This is one of my favourite, favourite films. This is John Candy's only romantic comedy and he stars along with the lovely Ally Sheedy. Maureen O'Hara and brilliant as Candy's overbearing Irish mother - and believe me, if you have an Irish mother you will understand quite a bit about Candy's guilty feelings and O'Hara's protectiveness of her son. If you want a fun movie to relax and have a good giggle at, this should be top of your list !

I believe this film is very under rated and doesnt receive the credit it deserves.Made by John Hughes has contains an excellent cast including James belushi as John Candys cop partner. Its a film about chicago cop danny (john candy) and his jealous mother (maureen o'hara), Danny wants to find someone to spend his life with has he fears he starting to fade away from the dating game and so hes running out of time. However soon falls for Theresa (Ally Sheedy) coinsidently, however the mother realises that despite her efforts to make Theresa leave Danny, it isnt what she expects has danny and theresa like each other to much. The mother does this in order to have company in her own hosue and doesnt want danny to leave her all alone. Its a romantic film with a gud few comedy bits, and some sad bits, however its one for the funny to watch over and over again.

Don't you just miss John Candy? Not one of his funniest parts - he's actually out-acted by the wonderful Maureen O'Hara - but a fabulous film all the same that leaves you with a happy glow at the end.

The combination of John Candy at his "great big teddy bear" best and the talents of Maureen O'Hara and Anthony Quinn ensure that this is a movie that will be enjoyed for a long time to come. The addition of Ally Sheedy proves a superb counterpoint to all three of the other actors. The 'feel-good' storyline works and there are just enough quirky bits in the movie to keep it rolling along. The idea of Candy as a romantic lead seems far-fetched at first but he is superb.

Only The Lonely is one of John Candy's best movies. I really enjoyed wathching this again after a few years since I last saw it. Excellent performances from the cast, and good directing by John Hughes make this film a true classic. The only thing I would say is the packaging design/ artwork is terrible!! If I hadn't watched this film before I would be very put off buy the cover. Looks very tacky, but ignore that fact and Only the Lonely is well worth adding to your collection. Buy it!

I bought this film to show my daughters, as they liked John Candy in 'Uncle Buck'. They thought this film was very funny too as he is such a fun character, it even had my husband laughing as he remarked it was just like his mother! This is a fun family film to watch.

Love this film, had seen it before I purchased it so knew what I was getting. Would highly recommend, especially for fans of John candy probably a bit different from his usual roles, a more gentle comedy
