a great vehicle for showing off Mark Dacascos' talents. having seen him in such things as The Crow Stairway to Heaven, later, i can say that his acting has gotten better, but his incredible skill as a martial artist is always fantastic. Here, Mark plays Louis, and ex Green Beret, who spent years living in Brazil amongst the locals, he learned the Brazillian Martial Art of Capoeira there. On returning to Miami, he finds his old school overun with drug dealers and no hopers. after a confrontation with some of the dealers, the school asks Louis to train 12 of their worst students in the art of Capoeira. Most of them are uninterested until they see what they can achieve if they try. One of the students, Orlando, has a cousin who runs the local gang and terrifies everyone. He and Louis take an immediate dislike to each other. The rest of the story is taken up with scenes of the kids training, Louis and Orlando's cousin fighting. When one of Louis' stedents dies in a fire caused by the gang, its time for Louis to pay them back. I enjoyed the film and its message that if you try hard enough, you can accomplish anything. Mark Dacascos is great although has never looked particularly 'Hard'. the other actors portraying the high school kids and teachers do a decent job, but the actor playing Orlando's cousin (actor Paco Christan Prieto) is terrible, can't act, has a really dodgy accent and looks like he's never had any proper fight training, never mind being a master of Capoeira, which is what he's supposed to be. he doesn't fight like any of the others in the film. Theres some great scenes at the beginning and end of the film of real Capoeirists in action, including Amen Santo, who was Mark Dacascos coach for the film. its worth watching just for these few scenes.
