Amazon.co.uk Review
The title of this double album makes an audacious claim, but there are some classic performances: Ethel Merman ("There's No Business Like Show Business"), Carol Channing ("Hello, Dolly"), Zero Mostel ("If I Were A Rich Man") and Angela Lansbury ("Everything's Coming Up Roses") are present in all their glory. Even Marilyn Monroe, who didn't star in a single stage musical, sneaks in with her quintessential "I Wanna Be Loved By You" from
Some Like It Hot. More recent talents are represented by Michael Ball ("Love Changes Everything"), Alan Cumming ("Money"), Maria Friedman, Ruthie Henshall, Debbie Gravitte ... and the list goes on. Original cast numbers are supplemented with tracks licensed from TER's series of complete studio recordings, and solos from, among others, Cleo Laine and Lesley Garrett. Even Julie Andrews gets a look in, although sadly it is only through her voice over for the parrot in the London production of
Doctor Dolittle. Most of the great, popular shows of the second half of the 20th century years are represented, and it would be hard to fault the cast list, even if some of them are odd choices: why, for example, have Marti Webb singing the Phantom's aria, "Music of the Night"? All in all, though, an indulgent hotchpotch for the easy listener rather than a selection for musical purists. --
