Biography

On the day Garbage gathered in Wisconsin to start work on their fourth record, they came up with the glittering and steely "Right Between the Eyes" in all of 30 minutes. Things would not go quite so well with BLEED LIKE ME again.

The band battled illness, surgery, creative disagreements, major life changes and-depending who you ask-either a break-up or a much-needed sabbatical. ... Read more in Amazon's Garbage Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonus Track Rocks! 20 Feb 2002
Format:Audio CD
I have to say I have always loved 'Only Happy When It Rains' but you really should buy this for the bonus track 'Sleep'. It is truly one of the most beautiful songs they have ever written and every person should have it in their cd collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars "In Praise of Suicidal Depression" 28 July 2009
Format:Audio CD
This was without a doubt one of the best singles produced by one of the best bands ever to grace the 'Top 40.'

No bland formulas or twee, 'plastic pop' emotions, but instead, an unadulterated celebration of misery and pain.

"Pour Some Misery Down on Me."

The lyrics, the music, the production; they are all staggering, and Shirley Manson's voice is superb.

"An Angel With a Switchblade." ~ NME Magazine.

On top of that, the B-sides are both equally spectacular. But I must say that the slow, heart-aching melancholy of 'Sleep' deserved to be a single on its own. So if you're a 'Garbage' fan, then why on Earth haven't you bought this single yet? And if you're not a 'Garbage' fan, then buy this single and become one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic.. 19 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I'll always remember Only Happy When It Rains fondly, as the track that got me hooked on Garbage in the first place. It showcases Garbage's trademark affinity for loops and samples, clever lyrics, and Shirley's ever-sultry vocals. Pure alt.rock perfection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Depressing....The way it should be 14 Jan 2000
By Tony Buccolo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This single off their first album is very enjoyable. The 2 extra tracks are "Girl Don't Come" and "sleep". The last track "Sleep" is very slow with Shirly singing in that sexy voice of hers and a slow piano playing. It is depressing, just the way I like it. My only complaint is it is not long enough. It runs under 2 min. or so.

Awesome as always...i bought this import several years back to complete my collection of all things Garbage...Girl Don't Come will definately have you singing along with it's hard edged lyrics and infectios beat, Sleep is a very melanchonly song with deep lyrics and of course we all know the title track. Buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars All I want to do...is... 12 Jun 2006
By Gyakusetsu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Tracklisting:

1. Only Happy When It Rains

2. Girl Don't Come

3. Sleep

'Only' is Garbage's first widely popular song, and for good reason! The dynamic and emotion of this very nicely executed song make for an instant music classic!

The b-sides are great too! My personal favorite 'Sleep' is a very haunting track and worth the price of the CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice range of styles from Shirley and the boys. 30 Nov 1998
By Rod Johnson (rjohnson@umi.com) - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
There are three tracks on this single: 1) Only Happy When It Rains; 2) Girl Don't Come; and 3) Sleep. I liked all of them. Any Garbage fan should already know "Only Happy When It Rains" from their first CD. The second track, "Girl Don't Come", is a hard driving tune with a bit of industrial-style grittiness. Nice production work melds the effects into a good song. The real gem on this single is the third track, "Sleep". In direct contrast to the first two tracks, "Sleep" is a soft tune with an interesting rhythm and a great vocal performance from Shirley. Singing at what is probably the lower portion of her vocal range, you get to hear Shirley at her sultry best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Range and Satisfaction 17 May 1999
By major_motoko@yahoo.com - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Although disappointing because it only contains 3 songs, this single does redeem itself because those 3 songs are quite varied. "Only Happy When It Rains" has hard guitar riffs and driving beats, yet remains poppy. "Girl Don't Come" has the same effect, but replaces poppy with dark. Finally, "Sleep" is quiet and ethereal and really shows of the lower notes in Shirley's range.
