Amazon.co.uk Review

Regularly touted as one of the best British sitcoms ever, Only Fools and Horses kicked off in 1981 when mobile phones were the size of bricks and wine bars were the ultimate places to hang out in. The formula was simple enough: Cockney wideboy Derek "Del Boy" Trotter (brilliantly played by David Jason) dreams of better things for himself while sharing a cramped council flat in the nicely named Peckham tower block Nelson Mandela House with his unworldly brother Rodney and his sweet but doddery old grandad. Trouble is, Del's endless money-making schemes (such as his attempt to flog a consignment of one-legged turkeys, or his plan to sell bottled tap water under the label "Peckham Spring") inevitably backfire, like the beat-up old Robin Reliant van he uses to cart around all this faulty gear in. Created by John Sullivan, who also sings the very catchy theme tune, Only Fools and Horses is a wonderful mix of dodgy but loveable characters (such as Del Boy's dimwit friend Trigger), knockabout slapstick (no-one falls down with as much comedic grace as Jason) and brilliantly crafted dialogue. Sadly, Leonard Pierce who played Grandad died in 1983; but his armchair in the Trotter household was filled in 1985 by Buster Merryfield as Uncle Albert (an old merchant seaman who used to bore Del and Rodney with tales of his war days). The show ran to seven series and ended with characteristic warmth in 1991, when Del Boy became a father; but the Trotters made occasional returns to the small screens with six hugely popular one-off Christmas specials. As Del Boy himself might say: "Lovely jubbly". --Edward Lawrenson

From the Back Cover

Trotters Independent Trading Comany guarantee you nothing but laughs in these classic episodes - the entire 4th series...

Happy Returns
Rodney's in love with Debbie from the newsagents. Could this mean the end of his dirty magazine fetish? Trouble is, she's only 19 and 19.5 years ago Del was pretty friendly with her mum June...

Strained Relations
Grandad's funeral brings relations from as far aways as North London, including Uncle Albert whose intentions leave Del feeling "like a turkey who's just caught Bernard Matthews grinning at him".

Hole In One
Instead of the Albert 'all, Rodney's pop group were heading for "sod all" until Del discovered their commercial potential. As usual, it doesn't quite work out as they'd like...

Sleeping Dogs Lie
Del is on to a great new money-making scheme - looking after Boycie and Marlene's new puppy Duke for a steal at 60 pounds a week should be a doddle...a bit of the old Pedigree Chum and they should be away. Then Duke falls victim to salmonella poisoning.

Watching The Girls Go By
Rodders is desperate to find a woman for the party at the Nag's Head. Nothing new? This time he's got a bet on with Mickey and Del's gonna make sure he wins...

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't be a plonker all your life and buy this DVD., 16 Jan 2002
Dodgy Video Disc it most certainly ain't. I have series 1-3 and 5 on video and now series 4 which this DVD is. Out of the 5 series this one is one of the best. It features the classic episodes where they boys look after Boycies dog for a while and Uncle Albert gets frisky. Also the episode where they chase after a rare butterfly and Rodney has to get in the pond after it. Yep theres plenty of rib ticklers in this series and to say theres no features then someones telling you porkies Rodney. Why, well the episodes are chaptered and you can go straight to you favorite scenes. But other than that theres nowt else. So please BBC give us some out-takes etc and other stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Del, Rodney and Albert giving us even more laughs, 7 Mar 2001

This review is from: Only Fools and Horses - Complete Series 4 [VHS] [1981] (VHS Tape)
As an owner of all of the other Fools Series, I have been eagerly awaiting the release of Series 4 and it dosen't disappoint. The Series introduces Uncle Albert during the farewell scenes for grandad and ensures the continued success of this well loved BBC Comedy. In this series Del and Rodney become dog sitters, move into the pop industry and continue their quest for true love. Fun and frolicks you can watch again and again, due to the superb acting and comedy timing, a classic. COSMIC !!
